John Kerry's choice of John Edwards as his running mate was received favorably by the public, polls suggest, but it has made little difference so far in the race with President Bush.
An AP-Ipsos poll released Thursday offered an early hint there would not be a post-Edwards bounce for Kerry.
Bush had a slight lead over Kerry as voters expressed increasing confidence about the economy. Bush was at 49 percent, Kerry at 45 percent and independent Ralph Nader at 3 percent, according to the poll conducted for the AP by Ipsos-Public Affairs.
Other polls in the next few days showed Bush and Kerry essentially tied in a three-way contest. Kerry had a slight edge in a two-way race with Bush in some polls.
Almost half, 47 percent, said in a Time-CNN poll that Edwards would make a better president than the current vice president, Dick Cheney, while 38 percent said Cheney would be better.

I am glad to see Bush is leading -- but how ignorant can voters be, preferring Edwards to Cheney as president?
poll ping
"but how ignorant can voters be, preferring Edwards to Cheney as president?"
I share your frustration. But you have to remember that Edwards has never been targeted for national public scrutiny yet. Cheney has been for 4 years. Any reasonably pretty public figure who has never been scrutinized will poll above any experienced public figure who has been.
Don't get discouraged. The left fronts these polls every election, and seldom do they show any relation to reality at election time. If the right had as firm a grip on the media as the left does, leftists couldn't get elected to dog polisher.

Isn't this a pretty sad commentary about how people make their decisions, even about such important matters, as who is going to lead our nation in a time of war?
I heard an interesting comment from a Wall Street Journal editor on the radio this morning. He said that there are 3 polls that are thrown out by them upon arrival. Those 3 are the NY times poll, the LA times, and Newsweek.
Those 3 over-poll democrats by outrageous margins as a matter of policy.
I am not surprised that Edwards adds nothing to the ticket (in the way of a bounce). He's a pretty boy empty suit. Those who would be swayed by that nonsense were already in the Kerry camp.
Right. Once news trickles down that Edwards is the reason obstetricians are shuttering doors all over the country, he'll be in trouble.
The Cheney-Edwards issue has little to do with the election. The economy issue is going to be a squeaker. The fundamentals are starting to deteriorate.

People should be aware of this kind of information, because it affects turnout.

What are you talking about? It's the other way around.
Better growth and more job growth is expected in the second half.
"Isn't this a pretty sad commentary"
Absolutely. This is the problem with Television. On Radio and in Print, people have to make a coherent point to gain followers. On TV, the images can form a false impression and the opportunity for bias is without limits.
I agree. And it's up to our side to make sure that message is pounded in loud and clear.
If the main issue is on the economy, the advantage goes to Edwards. Kerry's lover can chant the mantra of standing up for regular folks. However if homeland security is the priority, then Cheney is King.

Gore did too, and it didn't fool anybody. The economy issue just depends on hwo the economy goes. If we have 300,000 plus jobs being created for the next 6 months, Kerry/Edwards ticket is finished.
