Remember Buchanan's convention speech in Houston?

Posted on 07/12/2004 7:52:29 AM PDT by 1Old Pro

I clearly recall Buchanan's speech at the Houston GOP convention having watched it live and recoreded it on tape for future review.

I listened to it at least 3 times. This was when Pat was still a Republican and before he went off the deep end.

Personally, I thought this was one of the greatest speeched ever given at a convention. The media went NUTS. They talked about His hate filled, mean spirited speech for MONTHS on every single TV show and in every article written on the convention.

This year our convention will be full of moderates and boring speeches. Would you prefer conservative speeches that speak to many of our values AND the months of media criticism and labeling of the GOP as hateful? I would. Reagan spread the conservative word and I think the GOP of the 21st century should do the same and stop trying to run from our values.

I can't help but wonder if wasn't the GOP's reaction to his speech (scurrying to villify it like the poltroons many party hacks have become) wasn't instrumental in his 'going of the deep end' on the party.

People like you and me, yes.

The rest of the world won't watch, period.

The ones who do know how to articulate it recognize that government cultural engineering is more characteristic of Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia than of a civilized society.

Pardon me, but that is totally incorrect. Ever hear of welfare, have you watched the staggering increase in single parent households as one of thousands of examples.

Perot have not had one single statement or an interview since 9/11? What is wrong with that?

He's through with politics. He's 74, still goes to work every day, and has not been in the best of health.

By indulging his hobby of interfering in elections, Perot gave us eight years of Clinton.

unpleasant messenger in 1992

In '92 we just had an eight-year dream recovery and foreign policy miracle,  --and Buchanan's speech dwelt on tears over mass layoffs and spotted owls.  What I specifically remembered of the speech was that it seemed long.

Please explain what was wrong with Buchanan's speech. How was it ugly? What would you have changed?

"I never knew that Buchanan displaced President Reagan."

I don't think he "displaced" him as much as Bush the Elder's campaign team "misplaced" him.

It was one of those things that when you view it, you just shake your head in disbelief.

You are correct, but in a highly devided nation, I would have thought that Larry King would bring him on to diss Bush? Larry would win a brownie point from the brass in CNN, and all the liberals; don't you think?

"Our state is FAILING because of moderate Republicans being afraid to stand up to radical liberals."I think one of the interesting things in the decade ahead will be the radical contrast between working and failing states. The failing states are going to want FedGov to bail them out. Cali is still in a world of hurt. The 'rats refused to cut programs, so taxes will have to be raised. They may pass you in NY as the highest taxed state. The productive have been leaving by the SUV full for a decade, and replaced by no-income invaders from sunny Mexico.

In '92 we just had an eight-year dream recovery and foreign policy miracle,

We had an economic slowdown, a lackluster campaign and Perot.

As for Pat being "vindicated," he was an angry, unpleasant messenger in 1992, and he still is.

His speech pushed Reagan's last major address to Republicans out of prime time, one of the single dumbest things the GOP has ever done at a convention.

Worth repeating.

"Buchanan speaking in prime time cost the GOP the election, and gave us Bill Clinton.
Not likely. Bush LOST the election because he strayed from conservatism, lacked the fire in the belly to take on Klintoon, had mediocre advisors."

Bush the Elder was elected with one thing in mind, fulfilling a "third term" for Reagan. The choice of Buchanan was the end result of Bush the Elder running away from Reagan on all fronts for three and a half years. From taxes on down the line, the Elder Bush made mistake after mistake after mistake...and its clear to me it was due to his desire to "be his own man".

He suceeded. He was "his own man" for one term as President.

What would you have changed?

I would have changed the lineup that night and marked his name off the list.

He was and is a poor loser.

Pat's doing a great job of that over on MSNBC.

Guiliani and Zell Miller, boring? And Rod Paige who criticized the teacher unions, a moderate?

I disagree.

This speech probably cost the GOP the Jewish vote for at least two generations. It was probably the single biggest event in getting Clinton elected.>>>>

What a bunch of malarky. First off, the Repubs never get the Jewish vote.

However, I did read the speech again. Perhaps you could point out a couple things that you think would be offensive to Jewish people. Or do you think just letting Pat speak was offensive?

the fact that this speech seems relatively mainstream to me says I'm either a hate filled extremist, or my views are pretty normal.

I agree.
The platform is still conservative so I have no problem with the speakers being moderate.

why explain? It has been a long time. I remember watching it after having moved to a new house and having no furniture so having to sleep on the floor waiting for the movers. I just remember hating it, feeling somewhat revolted by it and not liking Buchanan. I still don't like Buchanan. No reason to explain or argue, just don't like the man.
