Will Doom 3 revive the struggling PC Gaming Industry?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

Why would you want to play at anything but the highest levels? :)

I just started playing it a few weeks ago -- still can't kill Duriel with my 26th-level assassin.

Duriel is the hardest Act Boss for melee-combat characters to deal with. Spellcasters can take him out much more easily - my cold Sorceress (now 77th level) took him out with Blizzard in both Normal and Nightmare difficulty in about fifteen seconds.

You end up having dreams all night where you are moving down corridors, just like in the game.

LOL! You too?

Why a video game is of any significance to our economy remains one of life's great mysteries.

It drives purchases of high-end computer systems. Most people who have any use for a computer at all already have one that is quite good enough for surfing the net, writing letters, balancing the checkbook, etc.

On the flip side, remember that commercial poking fun at the commies who gave no economic value to what people wanted: Eveningvear... very nice.

I think that was a Wendy's commercial. Hilarious. Everyone looked like Leonid Brezhnev, including the female models.

I was never a big Doom fan but I think I'll pick up this game. I'm really looking forward to Half-Life 2. However, the game I still play the most is Civ 3.

Something about blowing demons to little bits at the end of the day that makes me smile.

I know - the way they run off when one gets hit, those little Carver guys have "Democrat" written all over them... ;)

Call of Duty ROCKS!!!! The hours I have wasted playing that game til 2-3AM in the morning. Now, with Doom 3 coming out, who is the first that is going to make a Michael Moore Mod? I can imagine monsters with Whoopis, Moores, etc. head on them and the having to clear that level with a rail gun....

I remember playing Castle Wolfenstein 3D, but I really cut my teeth on the original DOOM. I would play for hours.

We would bring our PCs over to a friends house and play it networked. The room we played in didn't have any windows and we went through more than one all night sessions. I had to re-take a few college classes over it.

If your machine slows to a crawl at the highest settings then you may want to do without some of the effects to be able to play at a decent framerate. When I said levels I meant graphics settings, not actual game levels.

If you like Medal of Honor, then make sure to check out Call of Duty (if you haven't yet).

Forgot about that one. Finished it on the hardest setting in 2 days.

Another game I just thought of was "Iron Storm". An alternate history game where WWI has been going on for 50 years. You're a spec ops guy who has to go behind enemy lines and prevent the Russo-German alliance from developing nuclear weapons.

Worst first person shooter IMHO is BF-1942.

If you like Counter Strike, try Day of Defeat.

www.dayofdefeat.com

It is a Steam download, so its free to you.

It is a WW2 combat simulator.

No Lazer beams or other modern weapons, just good old fashioned rifles.

Tactics rule, not reaction time.

Cheers,

knews hound

I remember with Doom 2 you could find all sorts of mods where people had replaced the heads of demons and other monsters with Clinton and other figures. IIRC, Clinton's head was on the imps, and it would make a very Bubba-like sound when you blew it away.

Not that I recommend that sort of thing.

The only first person shooters I've ever played have been the Delta Force series from Novalogic (both single and multiplayer), Ghost Recon and the Medal of Honor series for the PC but only in single player.

I really enjoy Conflict: Desert Storm, which is a small-squad strategy / FPS.

Ditto! I played nothing but multiplayer for the first 4-5 months... Just got around to playing single player now. Its pretty cool, too. The sound with 7.1 is great, btw.

Yup, been holding off upgrading for 18 months waiting for doom to hit, so looks like I get a new machine next month.

Red Baron is the only flight sim I ever really liked. The planes are slow enough for me to handle. I have the Aces series on CD so I may try them again some time.*

* I just bought a KVM switch and am reworking my old Pentium 233MMX into a multiple boot DOS and Win 95 box to run my old games.

Yea, I know what you said. I am just saying that Doom3 will be a revolutionary game in terms of graphics (supposedly), so playing it at low gfx levels is kind of a waste :]
