Ron Reagan Wrong on Stem Cells
Thursday, July 15, 2004
By Steven Milloy

Ron Reagan, the younger son of the late Republican president, announced this week that he would give a prime-time address in support of stem cell research at the Democratic National Convention in Boston later this month.

"Ron Reagan's courageous pleas for stem cell research add a powerful voice to the millions of Americans hoping for cures for their children, for their parents and for their grandparents," said a spokesman for John Kerry to the Associated Press.

Reagan told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the speech was intended "to educate people about stem cell research" rather than be critical of President George Bush. But the Kerry campaign seems to want to scare people by having the son of the revered late President Ronald Reagan decry President Bush and his pro-life supporters as the major roadblocks to a host of supposedly just-around-the-corner miracle cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes and other dreaded diseases.

It will be a junk science-fueled spectacle.

Ron Reagan needs to go back to Ballet Dancing. He is twisting the Stem Cell Research issue into a lie to hurt the Republican Party. His father must be really proud. What a putz (he looks like a malnurished scare-crow).

Featuring Ron Reagan at the Dem convention has nothing to do with substance, and everything to do with the hysterical lengths the Dems are going to. You just gotta pity them. And in a way I pity Ron Regan too. He's made a sap at every turn.

NO matter what Ron thinks about stem cells, it's no excuse to dance on his Father's grave by betraying everything President Reagan stood for. This is exactly what Ron is doing, by giving a speech at the DNC.

What are the ballerina's credentials for discussing stem cell research?

This author is full of crap. Embryonic stem cell research WILL result in amazing medical advances in our lifetime if it is legalized. The only question is to what lengths we are willing to go for those advances.

Embryonic stem cell research is NOT junk science. What a load of bunk to say so.

The guy's making a friggin' speech. What's courageous about that?

"Embryonic stem cell research WILL result in amazing medical advances in our lifetime if it is legalized."

Stem cell research is not illegal.

I'm a supporter of stem cell research too, but the "illegal" status is a total misconception. Bush's ban covers only federal funding of stem cell research. Private research is unrestricted. As with space programs, this may prove to be a blessing in disguise.

I pity Ron Regan

I really don't. He's been at this stuff for years. Now it's a basically phony issue to get back at Dad, basically.

It's a tragedy, yes. But I don't know if pity is the word. Frankly, I think people need to be warned about Prescott.

Maybe not. But what if, just for example, they got Zell Miller to speak on the issue of the Democrat Party abandoning American values and American voters?

Embryonic stem cell research is NOT junk science.

Junk science really has nothing to do with the field of study per se. Stem cell research, including embryonic stem cell research is not junk science. But some stem cell research can be -- or it is spun in a way that is exagerated or misleading which is not junk science but is junk reporting.

Embryonic stem cell research, or any research that involves the use of material garnered from a human being that was murdered is arguably unethical and immoral. That is the major issue.

Secondary is the exageration of the potential or implications of doing embryonic stem cell research, such as that "amazing advances" (to quote you) are sure to materialize.

There's not really much evidence that these amazing advances will take place with use of embryonic stem cells.

"...if it is legalized."

For someone who has such strong opinions on this, it doesn't sound like you've studied it much.

I don't think Ron Reagan gives a rat's a$$ about stem cell research. He is just looking for more ways to bash his heritage.

This kid is carrying a lot of hate/spite baggage and needs to make peace with himself before it's too late. It is eating him up.

I know what you mean. I always think it's weird when people say things like that when it would have been easy to find out that it is NOT illegal. What BS.
