The underlying survey which produced the "10% are abused" conclusion, counted everything from sexual assault to touching, to "inappropriate comments," to arrive at its figure. This was done to inflate the figures. Actual sex abuse is a small fraction of that 10%. This statement is meant not to justify the situation, just to clarify it.
What I would like to see is reporting of the "edukashun" union membership of the sexually abusive teachers. I expect that NEA members, with their belief in "alternative lifestyles," will be more sexually abusive than their ratio of teachers in American schools (and also more than teachers in parochial schools).

We need to push for vouchers.
You took the words right out of my mouth, er.. keyboard! Gosh, I thought the only abusers were Catholic priests too? Seriously, abusers exist in many vocations, as well as the RC church. And also in other churches and religions!

What happen with the priests was wrong . but you're right .. The Unions protect these teachers .. they are never fired and are allowed to transfer to another school without a mention in the files of why
Maybe the figures are inflated, maybe not. After all, how many reports of abuse don't come out until decades after the events?
I was never "molested" as such, either, as I was a homely child, but years later I realised that what a vice-principal of my primary (aka "grade") school put me through when I couldn't have been more than eleven (I won't write the details as to this day I find them traumatic to recall) was sexual abuse of a particularly subtle and therefore all the more difficult-to-report kind.
Okay, so I was educated in the Australian state school system - but I'd say the 10% quoted by the article is a gross underestimate.
All three of mine are homeschooled.
One of my son's middle school teachers was arrested for oral sex in a public restroom (at the mall) with a minor (one of the high school students). He claimed it was anonymous and that he didn't know the kid was underage...
When we had gone to back-to-school night the year he was one of my son's teachers, the guy had posters of male superheroes all over the walls. I think he was an english teacher. My son said he'd give them work to do in class, then sit and 'surf the net' during class. At least he never approached my boy!
I hope Patricia Ireland and the rest of the Communist Ogre Wh0res (COW) are happy. This is their brain child.
I guess it is a little too early for local Vigilance Committees.
HE ONLY GOT SIX YEARS FOR RAPING A BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am speechless.
I have to say - if I had that going on with someone who looked like her when I was 14, I would have kept my yap shut.
Judith, the only reason I see the figures as being 'inflated' is by virtue of the fact the the basis of the article is set on perameters of 'research' that are disturbingly wide. It cites 'jokes' and 'child rape' in the same sentence.
Don't you think that's a rather odd?
Pervert Pedagouge alert!
Fue lo mismo with my high school Spanish teacher.
The problem is not the homeschooled children.
the problem is the other publik skooled children who end up as adults.
they don't mention if the women were engaging in homosexual behavior.
