AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

By JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Sandy Rosenberger should have been jailed years ago for
helping to facilitate the transfer of atomic secrets to China
-- and now here he is 6 years later caught with his hands in the cookie jar again. I hope Ashcroft handles him better than Reno.

NOTHING will happen. Like Whitey Bulger, like the agents who laughed during the 911 Atrocities,
like the Boston agents who allowed murder to thrive,
like the coverup of the 900 stolen FBI files, NOTHING.

The second law of Thermodynamics will be overturned first.

"there were other people the government was investigating."

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

The trail might lead to a whole cast of characters which were trying to cover up the fact that they didn't alert the country to the coming attack. They still may not have known the specifics, but it is beginning to smell like someone knew a whole lot more than Bush did.

"FBI files stolen from the home of Vietnam war historian Gerald Nicosia detail at least one secret 1970 meeting in Paris between future Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and representatives of the communist government of North Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War."

Every reporter in D.C. is on this, this story will dominate the news for the next 6 weeks

With all the leaks in DC, I wonder why it took 6 months before we learned about it.

See #624. I posted a link to the article about Linsey blaming the Bush Administration for not turning over all their documents.

I remember that something that Rumsfeld said to Hillary! really seemed to rattle her.

You're correct, Mo. It WAS the prison scandal. I was thumbing furiously through my brain files trying to remember why in the heck Hillary would be testifying at the 9/11 commission. Now wonder I came up with "no data found".

Remember when Ashcroft pulled the surprise on Gorelick with the 'wall' memo? IF no one else on the committee knew (she obviously did), we know that was a 'you know and I know you know and now you know I know you know'.

Yay, Jerry Doyle! I just love that guy. He's just getting started on the story again. He's betting there's information in those documents that points the finger at 'Toon and Gorelick. He just termed it: Undie-gate. LOL

If you heard the NBC newsfeed at the top of the last hour, the reporters are getting more wound up about the Berger story too. The reporterette was all breathless and she actually said, "Berger stuffed the documents in his jacket and pants and smuggled them out." Hahaha.

More proof that liberalism is a disease, and a hazard to this country. It scares me that there are millions more out there like this one.

Geez... I left the best DU post out! These guys are sick! LOL! Ok, here it is:

I thought that this was a place that I could express my Democratic views.. Perhaps I was wrong. I didn't think that I was writing a "review." I saw the movie and I thought it was great, and it struck me as very unusual that a documentary could change history, as this one is going to do. I have lived for 49 years and never seen that. I have grown tired, as have the rest of you, of seeing the Dems in Congress run like scared puppies at the Republican vitriol thrown at them. I am so proud and so happy that we have a champion in people like Michael Moore and I wanted to tell people that I think that this movie is going to make history, as the first documentary to change the outcome of a national election. The reason that I admitted to downloading it should be obvious: I can make no comment (as many fellow DUers did) about my fellow audience members' reaction to it, since there were no other audience members. And, of course, I admit that I feel guilty because I did not give Mr. Moore a piece of my money, by going to the theaters to watch it. If I had wanted other people to download it, I would have posted the website here. Like I said, though, it's so nice to find that the very people you thought were on "your side," are your judge and your jury. Melanie

Knowing how they operate, I would think the Clintons might want it leaked ASAP. After all Bill is still trying to sell books. And Hillary's political ambitions must be preserved at all costs (gag).

I have heard from a reliable source
that Ashcroft is livid. I hope that
translates into throwing the book at
Berger.

Oh look, and it was written by Dana Millbank!

"By Dan Eggen and Dana Milbank
Washington Post Staff Writers Friday, April 2, 2004; Page A02

The White House has not turned over thousands of pages of documents from the Clinton administration to a commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, even though the records are relevant to the panel's mission, one of Clinton's attorneys said yesterday.

Bruce R. Lindsey, who represents the former president on records issues, said yesterday that the Bush administration has turned over about 25 percent of the nearly 11,000 pages of Clinton records that document custodians had determined should be released to the commission investigating the terrorist attacks. Lindsey said that, as a result, the commission may not have a full picture of the Clinton administration's anti-terrorism efforts.
