Twins Travel With Bush to Iowa, Missouri
Associated Press ^ | Tue, Jul 20, 2004 | PETE YOST

President Bush is squeezing in some campaigning before the political spotlight turns to next week's Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Bush's twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna, were to accompany him Tuesday. It's the first time they have made joint appearances with their dad on the campaign trail, although they each have traveled separately with him on other outings. The twins also will take part in an online chat Friday on Bush's re-election Web site.

Bush flies to re-election rallies in Iowa and Missouri, toss-up states that he and Democratic rival John Kerry are fighting hard to win this year. Bush narrowly lost Iowa in 2000, but won Missouri by about 3 percentage points.

Bush is scheduled to speak at an "Ask President Bush" event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before heading to a rally at the Family Arena in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles on his 19th presidential visit to Missouri.

His visit to the Show Me State comes a day after Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s sixth trip to Missouri, where on Monday he told a friendly audience at a lumber company in Columbia, Mo., that the nation's economy is on the rebound.

On Thursday, Bush speaks about homeland security in Glenview, Ill., and attends a GOP fund-raiser in nearby Winnetka.

Campaign finance reports filed Tuesday by the Bush campaign showed the president had raised nearly $230 million by July and spent about $160 million through June. At least $84 million went to ads, and another $32 million went to mail-related costs. Bush began July with about $64 million in the bank.

Aides say the president will stay out of sight at his Crawford, Texas, ranch from Friday evening until the Democratic convention concludes July 29. He's expected back on the campaign trail the day after the convention.

His campaign, however, will send about a dozen people to Boston to rapidly respond to Democratic critics — a "thorn-in-their-side" delegation, as one Bush adviser put it.

"We'll have a strong presence in Boston to respond to all of the charges and the negativity and pessimism that comes out of John Kerry's and John Edwards' campaign," campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

Bush plans to charge back out to the campaign trail on July 30, the day after the Democratic convention ends, heading straight to four battleground states in two days.

Although Bush will be idle during the Democratic convention, Vice President Dick Cheney plans a West Coast campaign swing. He will continue headlining re-election rallies and delivering policy speeches contrasting Bush's records with Kerry's, they said, declining to provide details. Cheney also will appear at fund-raisers for Republican congressional candidates.

Eskimo, I will be happy to turn you in again as a serial disruptor. Do I need to do that?

Just don't call my mother?

Not likely. I can't stand the food in the cafeteria where they're keeping him.

What? No human companionship? It seems to me that folks would come for miles to spend time with someone with such a sunny attitude as yours.

Surely Marine One would fit in there also.

Maybe, but having the common folk see the Presidential limo drive by on their everyday streets is one of the main points of these trips.

And, BTW, the thing is impervious to RPG attacks.

I can only guess he wanted to stay on schedule. The helicopter probably saved 15 to 30 minutes. He actually started speaking early here at the Iowa stop. No doubt the folks further down the itinerary appreciated that.

What is? The limo?

I sure hope so. That would make me feel so much better.

No, he traveled by limo in Iowa. The helicopter photos were all taken at Andrews AFB.

Yes, the limo is heavily armored. I saw a special about it on the Discovery Channel not long ago. A lot of its protections are classified, but you'd have to try pretty hard to damage it. It weighs more than a Bradley.

No, he traveled by limo in Iowa.

Well, that makes sense. I mistakenly believed -- instead of clicking "View Replies" and seeing yours -- the guy who said the chopper was in Iowa.

It weighs more than a Bradley.

THAT'S very impressive.

That explains the door in this picture...

It looks like it's at least 6 inches thick.

Cool picture.

I would not be suprised if the SS considers the limo to be more secure than Marine One.

Just don't tell it to the Marines.

I love that picture. I took it off the Defense Department website.

It was just after the Abu Ghraib fiasco. It was good to see such a warm greeting between the two of them.

Take a look at the hi-res picture here.....

BTW, the presidential limo also carries its own airsupply and monitors, so Abdulla can also forget about chemical/biological attacks...

You added a lot to my comfort level about President Bush traveling around.

The insane dems are making me nervous. They seem to be losing all sense of reality.

Did you just hear the Fox News alert?

Alan Greenspan just came out and said that President Bush's tax cuts saved us from a very severe recession.

Sucks to be John Kerry.

I see my mistake. The picture caption was confusing.

Helicopter to Andrews, plane to Cedar Rapids and motorcade to Kirkwood Comm. College.

Thanks guys!

Oh,... but it is annoying to get trapped by one of those motorcades. Back in 2000 I was stuck for 20 minutes waiting for the Gore motorcade to pass. Pretty amazing operation. They blocked all traffic for at least 10 minutes prior to the motorcade passing. Helicopters overhead preceded a long line of vehicles lead by several police, then several very large dark SUVs, then more police cars, then an ambulance.

Saw the same thing down in St. Louis when Bush I visited.

Regardless of who is president, it bothers me that our highest officials feel so threatened by the general population.

I know... I know.... 9/11 changed everything.
