Kerry to Colombian president: break ties between army & paramilitaries (predicts his foreign policy)

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democratic presidential contender John Kerry, his running mate John Edwards and 21 other US senators this week called on Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to break ties between the Colombian army and the country's right-wing paramilitaries.

"We appreciate your commitment to establishing a secure future for Colombians and understand the difficult and complex challenges you face," the 23 senators told Uribe in a letter dated July 26, made available to AFP on Wednesday.

However, said the letter, "we remain deeply concerned about the continued levels of violence directed at the civilian population."

The letter, whose signatories were all Democrats except for Vermont independent James Jeffords, a converted Republican, urged Uribe to follow the recommendations of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) in dealing with violence in his country.

"The most urgent UNHCHR recommendation is to cut ties between the army and paramilitary forces engaged in abuses, by suspending, investigating and vigorously prosecuting officials engaged in such collaboration," said the letter.

"As you know, addressing these abuses requires impartial and effective justice," it said.

"The UN also raises important points regarding the vulnerability of human rights defenders, journalists and union leaders. Progress in investigating and prosecuting threats and attacks against such leaders is essential," said the letter.

AND, by the way, this should never be indexed under "Columbia" since the country is COLOMBIA. Yes, I'm screaming.

Don't scream. It's a typo. We all make 'em from time to time. I'll see if I can correct it. If not, there are worse things...

...this will all vanish if Kerry is elected.

We must work very hard between now and Nov. 2 to make sure that doesn't happen. I've been having a great deal of fun lampooning the Dem convention this week. But soon the real work of this election season starts.

NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Lt. Col. Robert "Buzz" Patterson in his new book RECKLESS DISREGARD, details one of the claimed Kerry reenactments for film:

"On February 28, 1969, now in charge of PCF 94, Kerry came under fire from an enemy location on the shore. The crew's gunner returned fire, hitting and wounding the lone gunman. Kerry directed the boat to charge the enemy position. Beaching his boat, Kerry jumped off, chased the wounded insurgent behind a thatched hutch, and killed him. Kerry and his crew returned within days, armed with a Super 8 video camera he had purchased at the post exchange at Cam Ranh Bay, and reenacted the skirmish on film."

A friend of mine is from Bogota. He's a college student and musician, typically idealistic and liberal, and even he thinks Uribe should be allowed to stay in office. Funny how those who aren't there think they can tell those who are what to do.

A friend of mine was kidnapped and killed by Columbian marxist thugs so I have a BIG problem with this. So will a lot of other Americans.

Yes, I think so (at least, I hope so) — if the word gets out into the mainstream. In the 1980's, when Ed Asner became so viciously outspoken about the situation in Nicaragua, the ratings for the Mary Tyler Moore Show plummeted, and Asner's career has never been the same.

I agree. Unfortunately, like most national leaders, he's probably being very cautious about offending Kerry on the chance (heaven forbid) that he becomes our next president.

. . .think 'government education' has changed a few things. I just hope that there of enough voters who still care about the truth of our enemies.

What he really is saying is "we remain deeply concerned about the continued levels of violence directed at the MARXIST REVOLUTIONARY population.

You're welcome, Cricket. In certain respects, Kerry would be worse than either Clinton or Carter. At least Clinton isn't an idealogue Leftist. Carter, for all his many faults, at least was hemmed in considerably (though by no means entirely) by the realities of his times. The Soviet Union still existed then, and economic times were bad. Kerry is a true Leftist idealogue with little to stop him from selling us out to the international Left (i.e., UN and Euros).

Oh, me too. I'm really sort of mentally holding my breath until the election. The prospect of a Kerry presidency really has me spooked.
