NJ Rifle program teaches gun safety to children

Garrett Fletcher loves to play video games, especially Medal of Honor for Playstation.

Through the Riverdale Junior Rifle Program, the 9-year-old from Pompton Lakes said he can imagine he's in the game, as he shoots at paper targets and wooden stakes. He's also learned that precision shooting in real life isn't as easy as in video games.

"It's pretty tough," Garrett said. "It's a lot easier to shoot the stake."

Before they are allowed to shoot, members are put through a safety program. There is a video and 30-minute lecture given by Berretta. They are also taught proper gun handling and the rules of the range before finally taken a written test, Berretta said.

"We try to instill respect for the firearms, leadership and concentration," he said.

"The kids walk away at least knowing how to safely handle a gun," said Ted Guis, president of the Riverdale Pistol Club. "I just like coming down and shooting and going up in rank," he said. "I want to continue shooting and join a club in college if possible."

See, children in NJ like to shoot. Do it now, with the democrats running the statehouse one never knows when guns and shooting sports will be against the law.

NJ once had rifle clubs in many High Schools, no more. Gun-free school zones are now in effect.

"But guns kill more children than wild-turkey attacks, guitar string suffocations, and dinosuar bone stabbings...combined!"

NJ is ridiculous. I recently discovered that it takes nearly 3 months to get ANY kind of gun license what-so-ever in NJ (even a .22 rifle!).

Imagine if you moved to a new state and they said, "Oh, we have free speech here, but it'll take you 3 months until you can get a license to exercise that right. So until then, shut up."

The biggest joke is that if I wanted to get a gun illegally, I could drive down to the town basketball courts (where I have seen [presumed] illegal pieces being flashed) and say, "I've got $500 if someone wants to sell me a gun." Viola - instant gun ownership. So, naturally, a criminal could get a gun but I can't get one as a law-abiding citizen for 3 months. Nice.

Like I always say: the more kids shoot, the fewer kids get shot.

This is intuitively obvious to anyone smarter than a Democrat/Socialist/Progressive.

The Justice dept has stats and studies to prove it too, if'n one is so damn dense he needs that.

Here is what I think John Ashcroft should do about 4 to 5 minutes after the AWB expires. He should have a photo op in a classroom. Jr high or high school. He should get up in front of the class and say, Okay kids, this is homeland security training. This here is an M-16 and these here are known AlQueda muslim f--ks.

.. Okay, well, seriously...

maybe John Ashcroft should get up in front of a group of kids and say, Okay kids, this is homeland security training. This here is an M-16 and these here are known AlQueda muslim f--ks.

Yep, the more kids shoot, the fewer kids get shot.

Ted Guis, president of the Riverdale Pistol Club

I never knew that Riverdale had a pistol club. Being that my office is literally less than a minute from Riverdale, I might just have to check it out.

Then I'm glad I posted this. It was one of the reasons I had in mind, basicly just to let the NJ'ians know it's there and being used and the rest of the county to know that not all people in NJ are anti gun. I remember reading the original story when the Wayne PAL closed the program a few yrs. ago.
