The Homeland Security Department mandates that federal air marshals must have neatly trimmed hair, and men must be clean-shaven.
The issue took on renewed urgency last month, when two marshals were removed from a Southwest Airlines flight leaving Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, after a supervisor saw them improperly dressed.

Yeah, they should blend in with the other poor, unkept vagabonds that wander the skies at $400+ a ticket.
On my last flight to D.C. they were more than easy to spot... and it wasn't by their dress.

The guys doing this work learn lessons for the anti-crime units in places like NYC.
Should air marshals be allowed to wear casual clothing so that they may better fit in with other passengers?

When I flew to Israel on el al, they were the guys who were awake for the whole flight. I mean who stays awake for 10-12 hours straight on a flight?

Air Marshalls are complaining about dry cleaning, folks. This isn't a "security issue" its a union financial position as it relates to compensation.
And as such, would be falling on deaf ears if not for it being an election cycle.
Within 40 ft of me right now are 27 men. 20 have ties on and short hair with no beards. Sport coats and suit jackets hang in their cubicles. I've traveled on business with all of them and they all travel in suits or sports jackets. (I work for an engineering company). I'd say Marshalls would blend in enough with them.
I am usually in jeans and a blouse with a collar. I stick out like a sore thumb, not only because I'm a woman. We don't have to wear suits. I think male engineers just must like 'em.
There was a thread a month back about the dress code for the air marshals. Something about suits and ties.
Posted this update because the marshals were booted off the flight.

What's next? Should undercover cops working drug stings be dressed in police uniforms or coat and tie?
