Stars & Stripes - letters to the editor; Too much FOX News on AFN
Stars & Stripes ^ | 8/06/04 | F.J. Kirby

Letters to the editor for Friday, August 6, 2004
European and Mideast editions

Too much FOX News

Which network was covering the Democratic National Convention on the AFN News channel but FOX News, with nothing but how bad the Democrats are performing. FOX News should be called the Republican News Channel.

Not only did we have to put up with FOX critiquing every speaker at the convention, but we had three hours nearly every evening condemning the Democrats for any proposal they presented.

Has anyone seriously examined the AFN News channel to determine how much time is devoted to FOX? Does anyone seriously believe this is fair and balanced? Is the purpose of American Forces Radio and Television Service to try and brainwash the military audience? It sure looks like it.

(Ret.) Chief Warrant Officer 3 F.J. Kirby

Pordenone, Italy

When I traveled overseas, I carried a short-wave set. I do today.
I would rather get my news from the beeb, Voice of Russia (flame away, I am an adult & know they are a propaganda arm) Radio Netherlands, Dutche Welle (SP?)and other news outlets. AFRN was simply unbelievable. S&S more so,

Your mileage may vary.

I would say that Armed Forces Radio has around forty minutes of programming per day that's trustworthy. That would be Limbaugh, of course.

First, what the he!! is a retired anyone doing complaining about AFN. Where is he picking it up, I don't see it on dish network. I can tell you first hand, while Operation Iraq Freedom was starting we (us USAF guys over in Kuwait) had Fox news on the TV 24 hours. CNN was a joke to us. We even had some CNN reporters show up wanting to interview us, most of us never gave them (CNN) the time of day. We knew CNN was not our friends.

Here's another: the Sunday S&S always used to sell out, and it doesn't any more.

They just raised the price too, which won't help them.

S&S staff writers are ok, although I see some real boneheaded mistakes sometimes re: military things that you would think would get caught in a military paper. As for rest, it's all AP, NYT, WP, LAT wire stories. No reason to think it would be any less biased than any other MSM. I think the editorial page has pretty good balance these days, much better than I remember 10 years ago.

This guy is in Italy and has the gall to complain that AFN has too much FOX on the TV. I live in Seoul Korea and our AFN has NO FOX news at all. We get CNN and Brokaw on the TV and CBS and a whole lotta NPR on the radio. We were getting Rush for 3 hours a day and some lib senator complained to DoD and DoD caved in and reduced it to one hour each day. Can you imagine what they put in that other two hours.......NPR. This guy has no complaint. Take up a collection and send him a subscription to the NYT so he can get his daily dose of propaganda.

I'd expect the members of our armed services aren't dumb enough to be "brainwashed" as you suggest. But then, I don't know how it was when you served?

The vast majority of the military population is Republican. Believe it or not, the military does try to provide programming that people want. Ref my previous post about what we get to view in Korea.

Retired and living in Italy and surely abled to afford sources for news, what is he compalining about? Seems here is a man with too much time on his hands. And, like it or not, Fox is still the most balanced and fair network.
