It is an understandable mistake. It was a life-changing event on a Christmas eve. Who would be expected to remember that? Lots of stuff was going on -- chestnuts roasting on an open fire; Jack Frost nipping at your nose, etc. It could have been on Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Groundhog Day, or National Secretaries Day.
