Another Kerry Lie?
RedState.Org ^ | 8/16/04 | Robert Torgoda

In various press releases, including an August 6 "fact check," the Democrats have asserted that "John Kerry served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for 6 years and is the former Vice Chairman of the Committee."

Eugene Volokh questions this claim:

Now the Republican National Committee is pointing out -- correctly, I think, based on my quick search -- that Kerry never was the Vice Chairman of the Committee; that post was held by former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey.

I've followed up on Professor Volokh's work and conducted my own research. Democrats won't be pleased with the findings....

Posted On: Aug 16th, 2004: 13:43:21

The LexisNexis Congressional Page, whose member profiles go back to the 1997-1998 session, provides the following intelligence-committee ranks for Kerry:
108th Congress (2003-2004): Not a member
107th Congress (2001-2002): Not a member
106th Congress (1999-2000): 3
105th Congress (1997-1998): 4

If he were the vice chairman at some point, we would expect him to have appeared in the number-two slot. But he doesn't seem to have reached that level. And it would be unlikely for him to have held the post in preceding congressional sessions when he was younger; typically, senators progress to higher ranking.

Still, for the sake of covering all the bases, the examination should extend to at least the 1995-1996 session. After all, Democrats have noted that "Kerry joined the Committee in early 1995 and served until early 2001."

A LexisNexis News search ("john pre/2 kerry and intelligence and vice chair!" from 1995 to 2001) yields 12 results. Only two are pertinent to the topic at hand -- and both display similar Scripps Howard News Service dispatches by Lance Gay.

I have found that FactCheck.org takes on both Kerry and Bush pretty much equally. I think it is a good source for what is the truth concerning cadidates claims. I just went there and there is 3 stories supporting Kerry and 3 stories supporting President Bush. It seems to be pretty even handed, not always correct, but usually.

"I think someone (not the President or his campaign) should go very hard regarding Kerry treasonous antiwar activities when he came from Vietnam. This will be extremely damaging as well"

Agreed!

The SwiftBoat Vets have hurt him bad.

The pressure needs to be kept up.

Someone posted earlier that Fox challenged him on this and the staff had no answer. We have had two Kerry impersonations unveiled this week: He appropriated Lt. Peck's military history as his own and BOB KERREY vice-chairmanship as his.

Another week of this and he'll be running for office in a strait jacket.

Imposter.

That would be the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and Mr. O'Neill.

If you want to run with the big dogs, you need to do more than count the number of "pro" and "con" stories, and draw a conclusion on that basis. Anneneberg Factcheck contorts facts, and that is easy to prove by looking at readily available source documents.

That Alton (sp) guy, the black guy, that was on Kerry's boat for a week or so, said the other day that they cant talk to the press without permission from the Kerry campaign.

I wish the press would start interviewing his Band of Bro's.

clearly the "delete" button on the Kerry website works: it deletes Joe Wilson, Sandy Berger, Vice Chairman, Christmas in Cambodia, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera

That's true. Various portions of Kerry's website are constantly being flushed down the memory hole.

The elephant in the living room is staring to break furniture.

Conservatives consider it a two-fer, as the story morphs from whopper into flip-flopper. But snared also is a hypocritical dino-media. Old News.

For almost a week the drip-drip-drip of what the Nixon Administration used to call a 'limited modfied hangout.' And this one being foisted by the Kerry Campaign is a doozy.

Will this damage Kerry beyond repair (this of course before claiming a vice chairmanship on the Sentate Intell. Cmte.)? No. But it will be 'Kerry's Killer-Rabit-Moment.'

A recent post at Free Republic was a reply from a reporter that should be following the story. Correction: the reporter is following the story. He just doesn't think it is worthy of his precious ink.

Probaly the same for the ID Theft from Bob Kerrey.

Most people that would be considered likely voters are aware of the Cambodia story. And having followed the 'Bush AWOL' charges leveled by Michael Moore and Terry McAulife, and dutifully picked up by Old News, they smell a rat. They should.

The Kerry-In-Cambodia is the stuff of late summer dinner parties. Water cooler conversations. And it usually gets its start when one Vietnam Veteran starts out laughingly to another, going on to describe the latest Kerry contortion he has picked up on Hugh Hewitt or other blogs that are doing yeoman's duty (no pun intended) in replacing what would have been a major breaking story if it had George Bush's name in the place of LT. Kerry of "Apocolypse-Then."

For 2004 will be Kerry's Apocolypse Now.

The long knives of Navy Seals, intelligence types, and those familiar with theatre operations during Kerry's Christmas-In-Cambodia as being unsheathed, leaving Kerry nowhere to run. This first documented case of reverse-amnesia that was 'seared,' 'seared' in his mind.

Maybe he should have sent it back to the chef for a 'little more fire.' This recollection was delivered to Kerry definitely underdone.

As we recollect this changing story over the next few months - yes months - it will be interesting if Kerry's historian, Doug Brinkley, and all those transparent media types, will ever put pen to paper so as to 'catch' Kerry's version before he is forced to recant.

Maybe that is what they know will eventually happen.

Paula Zahn was just talking about the "surge" Kerry got in popularity after the DNC. Yowza, what drugs is she taking?

She's quite correct. He's become a very popular whipping boy since then. :)

Now, now...only those senators who actually sat at with Kerry at the table are qualified to say whether he was there and what he did there (if he was there). In fact, the committee chair and those sitting more than, say, six feet from Kerry may not be qualified to sit in judgement of him since he may have been 1)slouched down in his chair to avoid having his name put on legislation, 2) on a secret mission and thus invisible or 3)under the table feeding a stray intern...uh...puppy the committee had adopted to help deal with the stress.

Well...now I'll tell you what. I'll give that reply about fitty cents worth of credit for its finely crafted structure and story-tellin' qualities. It walks a tight line between believable and road-apples. And I do appreciate that ability in the visual entertainment realm.

As for my opine on the gist...I do believe I will hold that in abeyance. I know how lonesome it can git in Baja Oklahoma.
