From the daily NewsHour e-mail:
Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) today vigorously defended his Vietnam war record against allegations a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made accusing Kerry of engineering the injuries which led to the medals he won for his wartime service. Jim Lehrer gets perspectives on the controversy over Kerrys war record from John ONeill, co-founder of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and Tom Oliphant, a Boston Globe columnist who covered Kerry during his postwar protests in Washington.
If you miss it on TV, it should be available later tonight (Thursday night) at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/video/index.html or simply http://www.pbs.org/newshour/ .
Their reports are almost always available in both video and transcript form at no charge.
Also, O'Neill's interlocutor tonight, Tom Oliphant, is a honorable man, though I suspect it'll seem to many of us that he's from a different planet tonight.
It's amazing and fascinating to me how choosing to trust Kerry or choosing to trust the Swift Vets (the choice the evidence prima facie requires, in my view) leads to a sort of domino effect that can lead people very sincerely to embrace such wholly contrary opinions of the whole political situation. Oliphant likely sees the dominos falling in the other direction, but he's an honest gentleman (I believe).
This should be an excellent discussion.
Swiftvet BBS thread on this is here:

Kerry's crew made a big mistake by bringing up the citation. It is almost as if the Swifties expected it. The response was perfect. O'Neill will quickly take the focus off the content of the citation and onto the authorship. Shines a little more light on Kerry's self serving nature.
Oliphant is a Major League Kerry Rump Swab.
Look for him to try to talk over O'Neill or keep interrupting with irelevant crap, like the rich Texan.
the content is what is damning to the author (meaning it's Kerry's LIEs they've been criticizing all this time)
Jeez, Does O'Neill Sleep? The man is Amazing.
Hopefully, he will have read the book.
You are right. I should have said took the focus off the content relative to the Swift Vet by adding context (received it after leaving the military, only Kerry wrote up the incident, etc)
I just can't wait until 60 Minutes gives him a whole hour to tout his book like they did Richard Clarke and Paul O'neil.
Oh, nevermind.
what kind of guy writes up a report calling himself a hero?
i've always thought heroism involves a degree of modesty.
Oliphant wrote a major hit piece on Kerry's convention speech. According to reports here it was because his daughter wrote most of the good parts of it and Kerry ruined them all with his delivery. Oliphant apparently doesn't like Kerry on a personal level. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Just heard ABC radio play the O'Neill's unedited response to the citation issue. Will pick up jaw off the floor after I post this.
FoxFan ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.

No JOKE!! That is a big time jaw-dropper there.
Brit covering one of the Lehman-signed citations right now with guest Lt Col Cowan.
Oliphant is having a hard time listening to O'Neill.
You mean those "high standards" that swallowed Kerry's Christmas in Cambodia story for 35 years never once even trying to check them out? Do you mean those standards Mr. Oliphant?
O'Neill ate that fruit's lunch for him. What's with the hair, bowtie and the femme voice? He couldn't even sit still!
Don't forget the NYT's publishing of Washington rumors on the front page.
