Bush urges Kerry to condemn attack ads President denounces ads in general

CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) -- President Bush on Monday called for the so-called 527 groups to stop airing political ads, but he did not directly condemn commercials by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that have attacked Sen. John Kerry's war record.

Speaking to reporters at his Texas ranch, Bush said he has repeatedly condemned 527 ads. These groups are named for the federal provision that makes such organizations tax exempt and allows them to accept unlimited donations.

The groups should "stop all of it -- that means that ad [the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth spot], every ad," Bush said.

Kerry can't and he won't. If he did, he'd also have to condemn his own campaign's attack adds against Bush, and would have to order the website to pull the "compare Kerry and Bush' service record" page. Kerry doesn't dare call off his 527s; they're too flush with money he can't otherwise use.

Just wanted to add, this morning the headlines were reading Kerry urging Bush to condemn ads.

The ads are going to go on, condemned or not condemned.

Bush nor Kerry can stop them.

Bush is too much the gentleman---the Dems are fighting dirty--and have the media to back them. He needs to fight back and expose them for the hypocrites they are.

Seriously!

Earlier this afternoon you would have thought the sky was falling when it was first reported that "Bush Condemns Swift Boat Vet Ad".

Even when some posters see "Reuters" in the byline they still rush to throw in the towel and react negatively to the President.

Don't misunderestimate the strategery.

The DUmmies are backpedaling somewhat. They admit that to lose all 527 support would be much worse for Kerry than for Bush.

I just LOVE it! If Poodle wants the attacks stopped, he should join President Bush in a public plea for ALL 527s to stop airing ads immediately. BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - THIS is just TOO FUNNY!

It is good strategery, but this continued assault on the First Amendment bothers me.

If not for 527s, the Swifties would be legally prohibited from airing the truth. Scary.

Kerry and the dems would keep a commitment much like the Palestinians do.

Traitor John has got millions in 527 dollars some of it from foreigners. He's not about to give of the sleaze leverage that gives him.

Or to be more specific, President Bush just sent Senator Kerry from the frying pan (the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads and the new book) right into the fire (questioning whether the Kerry campaign can separate itself from MoveOn.org and Americans Moving Forward 527 groups). If I were George Soros I'd run for cover right now because people WILL start asking questions about the Kerry campaign and their close connections with Democratic 527 groups.
