Food Police: Milk Is Unhealthy for Kids

Washington, DC -- Attention parents and teachers! The food police have added whole and two-percent milk to the list of "poor nutritional quality" beverages in their crosshairs, recommending that they be removed from American's schools. This and other ridiculous assertions are contained in a report being circulated by the self-described "food police" at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The draft report, rumored to be released this month, bears the name of CSPI's activist coalition, the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA). NANA is part of an anti-soda crusade which advocates taxing sodas and restricting their availability in order to eliminate fizzy drinks from the diets of both children and adults.

"Anyone who would suggest that milk is unhealthy for kids is out to lunch," said Richard Berman, executive director of the Center for Consumer Freedom. "CSPI once boasted that it was 'proud about finding something wrong with practically everything.' Now it's proven it."

The report concludes that school districts and local, state and federal governments should banish beverages and snacks that CSPI claims are contributing to the nation's obesity. But evidence linking childhood obesity to sodas and snacks is utterly lacking.

Suggesting a causal link between soda consumption and childhood obesity, the CSPI/NANA report relies solely on a flawed study by Harvard University researcher and "fat tax" advocate David Ludwig. Ludwig admitted in his own conclusion that, "there is no clear evidence that consumption of sugar per se ... causes obesity." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention echoed Ludwig's conclusion: "There are no data from the Harvard study that allow us to make an estimate of what proportion of obesity might be accounted for by changes in soft drink consumption."

This is not the first time the anti-soda movement has relied on faulty science to make their case. In 1998 CSPI issued a report titled "Liquid Candy," which claimed that some teenagers get up to 25 percent of their calories from soda. Just one week later, following massive media attention, CSPI admitted that it had overstated this figure by a whopping 100 percent. In fact, American boys drink less than half the amount of soft drinks initially claimed by CSPI. While CSPI quietly made a correction (after the media fracas died down), it still heavily promotes its "Liquid Candy" report.

"NANA should rename itself NANNY," added Mr. Berman. "Nagging Americans with a finger-wagging 'no no' won't shrink anyone's waistline. This is just another attempt by CSPI's Puritans to restrict foods they don't like. And as usual, there's no science in the public interest to back them up."

You never see other species drinking milk after they have been weened.

You also never see them driving cars, wearing clothes, inventing, writing, or debating. Because animals don't do it is not a reason not to do it. It's a personal choice.

Oh, for crying out loud - grow up, people.

I'm 42 years old and have drank milk from the get-go, and have suffered none of the ill effects trumpeted here.

If you are that paranoid, stop drinking water, breathing air and eating vegetables. I'm sure if you look long enough, you will find there is something life-threatening about them as well.

I'm not a retard! I don't support regulating, only informing. Are you anti-informing the public to health risks?

Milk is bad for you even if you want ot believe it is not. It is not about being allergic to milk, it is about what milk does to you once it is in your system. We are the "ONLY" animal that still drinks milk after being weened, and the only animal that drinks milk of another animal. It is not about animals rights.

I can understand how you would feel that way since it gives you problems. You are willing to believe every negative thing you read about milk. I don't think milk is necessary for good health & I recognize that there are negative things about drinking milk, but I do think the good outweighs the bad for most of us. Don't tell me to stop drinking milk & I won't tell you to stop eating corn or chocolate or anyone of the other things that I am allergic to.

Are you a moron? I said nothing about "you" should do anything, I only stated what I have learned about milk.

And what I expressed is not my "feelings" about milk, but the research of people I respect, not PETA. I do not care what you drink.

So why you would write to say to me "Don't tell me to..."

Research shows that the growth hormones in milk and cattle and chickens is the cause of young girls developing at 9 - 10 years old. So we have little girls looking like little woman.

Research also shows that they load up these animals with antibiotics, which has the effect of making it so people need higher doses and stronger antibiotics to get well.

You are new at FR so apparently you don't realize we are to refrain from making personal attacks. Calling me a moron is against the rules & it makes you look bad. BTW you are telling EVERYONE that they should not drink milk, not just me.

I am sorry, but please do not make statements to me that I told you to not do something. That is an attack on me. I believe that I stated why I don't drink milk and why it is bad, I didn't tell anyone to not drink milk.

Because I write why I think Kerry is unfit to be president am I to infer that i am telling everyone they are not fit to be president?

How you experience what I write is not in the purview of my control.

True.

Although I never see them drinking beer, wine, soda, fruit juice, etc.

I guess the other species aren't doing very well financially.

Soda's are very acidic, whould you drink battery acid. Milk coats the intestinal walls with a thick gooo. Both are not good for you.

Milk also is loaded with are sorts of drugs and hormones, not good.

You try to give a calf homogenized milk, I'm told it would died. The cow get its strong bones and calcium from eating green grass, not drinking milk!
There's is no milk in our household, replaced with soy drinks!!
Last week I talk wit a young man 350 lbs who have lost 65 lbs since march on our weight loss program. He was drinking 12+ cokes a day!! Count the sugar and calorie intakes and go figure!!!

I am really tired of this conversation. You have posted info from anti-milk groups that tell us that we should not be drinking milk. What else are we supposed to think that you are saying?

Are you anti-informing the public to health risks?

Of course not.

But I'm also for keeping the information realistic. To compare soft drinks to battery acid is an absurd overreach.

Where in OK are you from?

If you put a chicken bone is a soft drink and close the top it will desolve in a couple of days.

If your battery on you r car or motorcycle is dead and you look inside and it is very low on water and the car won't start. You can put Coke, Genger Ale or Pepsi into the battery and the car will start and the battery will last for some time, as in weeks.

Our stomachs produce HCL, much worse than anything the soft drinks have in them.

Yes, but the stomach is not designed to have a constant intake of acidic fluids and the high sugar content of soft drinks.

Then they will get acid reflux disease, go crying to a doctor who will prescribe the purple pill so they can keep drinking the stuff, rather than quitting.LOL
