Max Cleland Turned Away From Bush Ranch

Posted on 08/25/2004 11:36:49 AM PDT by GulliverSwift

Jim Rassmann, center, approach a Secret Service Agent, right, on station at the check point to the entrance of President Bush (news - web sites)'s ranch Wednesday Aug. 25, 2004 in Crawford, Texas. Cleland tried to deliver a letter protesting ads challenging John Kerry (news - web sites)'s Vietnam service to President Bush at his Texas ranch Wednesday, but the Secret Service stopped Cleland short of his goal. Bush should have invited them in, bad spin on our part.

No way. Never in a million years.

Bush should continue to stay miles above this dog fight, which is essentially between the Vietnam Veterans who were wronged by Kerry, and the desparate Kerry campaign which now finds themselves at the bottom of a big, mud-filled hole.

The best thing President Bush can do is just stay away and keep repeating his mantra that the 527s are wrong (even though I don't necessarily think so, and perhaps the Bush team doesn't either.)

No pony rides here today. You may want to try Neverland Ranch.

"If I was Bush I would have been standing out there waiting for them to deliver it and then smile and invite them in for coffee. Why you say? Just to tick the Kerry campaign off." Ditto. Bush mishandled this; now we'll be seeing pics and stories of the mean Bush turning away a guy in a wheelchair. No one in the media will comment on the crass manipulation by Kerry of Cleland's handicap.

Goodness, y'all sound like COURAGE fretting over a poll. Buck up, boys. The MSM was openly speculating if "this Swift Vet story" has gone on too long. Accomplished Vietnam-scab picker John Kerry has once again thrust the matter into spotlight.

"if you know how to do that."

:) There in lies the problem.

Why should Bush respond in the same juvenile manner that the Democrats are acting. He is upholding the Office of the Presidency and he did right by not responding to the childless way that Kerry is running his campaign.

Kerry reminds me of a grown-up in a Buster Brown suit throwing a fit and having a tantrum when things don't go his way. Oh, Lord, please spare us such a person as Commander-in Chief.

Here is a report about the person who was to accept the letter. It is quite humorous.

A Texas state official and Vietnam veteran, Jerry Patterson, said someone from the Bush campaign contacted him Wednesday morning and asked him if he would travel to the ranch, welcome Cleland to Texas and accept the former senator's letter to Bush.

"I tried to accept that letter and he would not give it to me," said Patterson. "He would not face me. He kept rolling away from me. He's quite mobile."

"You gave no reason why turing away these Kerry tools helps Bush - only recited talking points."

Oh...I don't know....

Maybe because the Kerry Campaign has now proven to be indistinguishable from the Jerry Springer Show?

"I think Bush fumbled the ball on this one in terms of publicity only."

Nah...then he would have been portrayed as bending over to Kerry supporters. He doesn't LIKE these people. He has no respect for them, and their whining only earns them more derison from him. The decision not to meet with them and give them a photo op at his expense was a personal one. Much like his refusal to walk into an NAACP "I hate Bush Fest".

Cleland Tries to Deliver Letter to Bush
The senators signing the letter to Bush included Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, Ernest "Fritz" Hollings of South Carolina, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Jack Reed of Rhode Island, Tom Carper of Delaware and Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, both of New Jersey.
ALL OF THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

Is it true that Mr. Cleland's injuries aren't combat related? I read somewhere that he was playing around with a grenade and it went off. True or false?

It doesn't matter if he likes them, and it doesn't matter if he respects them. This is public relations, and it is based on a cold calculation: will receiving them, accepting the letter, setting the dogs on 'em, or some other alternative best influence voters who would change their minds in November.

The Bush team has done the correct calculation. This is a transparent stunt that everyone recognizes as such. Ignore it--politely--but ignore it.

The Kerry campaign says this wasn't a political stunt for theater purpose...

The rats are getting creative.

It is true. A number of Cleland apologists have attempted to ambiguate the story and portray Ann Coulter's essentially correct characterization as a smear. A good source, including his full bio is here.

I feel bad for how he is being treated by Kerry and his operatives.

Oh, I wouldn't feel bad for old Max. He's not doing this for his health. It's obvious he wants a choice position in a Kerry administration.

LOL... WHAT? You mean a stair stepper???? Sheesh.

Bush should have come out... said "hey Max, how are you. Thanks for the letter. I'll read it this afternoon. Have a great trip back. Later!"

Maybe Bush wasn't home. Maybe he is heading to the Olympics. I haven't been around today to know where he is.

That is why Bush should have - ahem - disarmed Cleland's political ploy with an invite in.
