Wounds of War Are Reopened By Kerry's Battle
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 27, 2004 | Daniel Henninger

Posted on 08/27/2004 7:39:39 AM PDT by OESY

...How can this be happening? ...Why didn't one wise head among the Democrats point out the obvious difficulties of the Kerry candidacy once past the party's primary voters? This is a man who would be running as both a hero of Vietnam and a famous accuser of the war's heroes....

The reason... lies in something often asserted but little respected in our politics now -- principle. Alongside support for the civil-rights movement in the 1960s, opposition to Vietnam forms the moral bedrock of the modern Democratic Party. John Kerry (whose fidelity to principle, on the available evidence, is weaker than that of those who voted him into this role) is obliged to stand by his 1971 testimony as a matter of principle. Abandon that, and the party abandons him....

To any adult, those years in America were simply awful, a nightmare. Much more was happening than one ambitious 23-year-old's testimony before Congress. A bomb damaged the Capitol building. The Weather Underground claimed other bombings around the country. The day after the famous veterans' medal-throwing display in April 1971, a half-million demonstrators came to Washington, with 12,000 arrested. My Lai, Tet, Khe Sahn and Da Nang were household names. Student protesters were shot dead at Kent State and Jackson State. Assassinations.

The country paid a high price.... During Vietnam, politics became a destructive force and tore the country badly. It unleashed a wave of pessimism that rolled on and on as the Vietnam Syndrome. A bitter fight was waged over a memorial to Vietnam in Washington, but in time that wall became a place of peace and consolation....

Choosing to place Vietnam at the center of his candidacy, Mr. Kerry... has loosed the dogs of politics and war again. Surprise, the old dogs of Vietnam still bark and bite....

The DNC has no excuse. The Swift Boat Vets against Kerry went to them about a year ago and told them Kerry was a problem. They went to the Kerry campaign last March and told them what was coming.

They probably thought that their stranglehold on the media would let them portray Kerry as whatever they wanted. Perhaps the old media's day is truly done...

I'm relieved that all this puss is coming out of a boil that needed lancing for 35 years. I didn't serve in the military at all due to getting the exact same marriage and newborn children deferments that Dick Cheney got. I was 1-A and was ready to go, if drafted, but I was not going to volunteer.

Nonetheless, I have felt insulted that we weren't allowed to win, that even though we won the Tet offensive, Walter Chronkite convined everyone we lost it, then Jane Fonda hurt us, as well as John Kerry.

I resented that the monument to our dead turned out to be a black wall, that America accepted all the teach-ins, sit-ins, freeway blockings and train track blockaids by America hating leftist prigs! I still hate that my stupid neighbor counteracts my huge lit Christmas Tree with his sickening lit-up "foot print of the American Chicken!"

It crippled America's pride with a nonsensicle "guilt-trip" and a can't win policy just in time for our American Bi-Centennial with Governor Moonbeam here in CA and the "Peanut Farmer President!" It lead to an American "Misery Index" and Carter's Malaise!!!

Then finally, thank God for President Reagan! The the first President Bush and General Norman Schwartzkopf opened up a can of "Whup Ass" on Sadam Insane! Finally, I felt the pride filling America once again! Then Clinton... Ugh! There we went in the toilet, again!!!

Put this stuff in perspective and quit being cornfused and be glad this stuff is coming out, once again! It's based on leftist hateful lies about America with the eager formerly mainstream media, still stuck in the 60's, 70's and 90's acting as stupid as the Vietnam protestors with their idiotic bullhorns, leading the "teach-in," still trying to confuse people.

Personally, I welcome the truth finally coming out!!! Not only did Kerry and Fonda cause the continued slaughter of our good men, they led to Pol Pot and his massive "killing fields" genocide and yet... These Liberal Demonicrat creeple people have the audacity to try to tell the rest of us we should feel guilty about the way we see America as the greatest, most exceptional nation on earth!!!

The Bush team has a lot of Reagan Era folks on their team and they will make us all proud of this country if we help them into another term. I cannot even visualize the degradation we will suffer under the Frenchurian Candidate and his leftist trial lawyer V.P. cohort!!! It will be worse than Jimmy Carter recycled!!!

Most excellent rant. You nailed it, although I think we're entitled to a more detailed explanation regarding the footprint of the American Chicken. ;-)

My sentiments exactly. I was raising teenagers and toddlers during those years, and it was tough going. We woke up every morning to the radio with all the bad news from VietNam, and the protests, and the hippies with their long hair and their drugs and their immorality, which had a negative effect on us as conservative parents. My boys were too young to be drafted, but we sure had concerns for them that they would be affected by the culture of that time.

I think it high time that the truth come out, the pigeons have come home to roost.

Not exactly.

But this is how the dems would like to be viewed.

The "moral bedrock" of the democratic party is Michael Moore.

Kerry the North Vietnam War Hero, stabbed our Nam warriors in the back then and afterwards.

He, also, stabbed those of us in the Military during the Nam War and never went to Nam. Then our Vets post Nam had to put up with this baby killer behavior in the Carter years. It didn't stop until Ronald Reagan booted the vile Carter out of office

What ever happens to this POS re exposure to America by the Swift Vets and other Vet groups is overdue. We will be hearing from Nam POWS and their families. We will be hearing from those who buried their sons and daughter and watched Kerry/Fonda and the lunatic libs urinate on their graves. We will be hearing from people around the nation who suffered due to Kerry/Fonda and the libs who controlled the media then and now.

I too had deferments during that era; Vietnam was a sideshow when I started my career and I chose to work for a defense contractor.

The true divide in this country, IMHO, is not between frontline troops and REMFs or Reservists or even civilians. The real divide is between those who respected the government and respected those who served it in the military, on the one hand, and those who did not respect the military on the other.

The thing that was so hard for us to grasp at the time was that, then as now, those who beg the question of their own objectivity but give us the Walter Chronkite line, "And that's the way it is," were actually claiming to be wise. They were presuming to talk down to the nation, and we-the-people had no way of defending ourselves against their PR assault on our intelligence and character.

Now we have the Internet and talk radio, and we are media savvy about camera angles in a way that we simply were not 30 and 40 years ago. And I hope we learn once and for all that claiming objectivity is the mark of the propagandist.
