Kerry citation a 'total mystery' to ex-Navy chief

August 28, 2004

BY THOMAS LIPSCOMB

Former Navy Secretary John Lehman has no idea where a Silver Star citation displayed on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's campaign Web site came from, he said Friday. The citation appears over Lehman's signature.

"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he said.

The additional language varied from the two previous citations, signed first by Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and then Adm. John Hyland, which themselves differ. The new material added in the Lehman citation reads in part: "By his brave actions, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lieutenant (jg) Kerry reflected great credit upon himself...."

Asked how the citation could have been executed over his signature without his knowledge, Lehman said: "I have no idea. I can only imagine they were signed by an autopen." The autopen is a device often used in the routine execution of executive documents in government.

Kerry senior adviser Michael Meehan could not be reached for comment on Kerry's records.

The Swifties and the VietNam vets are going to force this issue now, and all of US are going to demand this cathartic cleansing of the national wound sKerry and the hippies inflicted on us.

And they have quite a few Vietnam era non-veterans in full and unequivocal support. Thank you for your service, AFPhys, then, and now. I hope and pray that the public understands its fault for falling for the propaganda. I have no idea how the damage could be remedied, but a good public airing is a necessary starting point.

Actually, autopen is used to sign awards and decs.

A Silver Star would be written up and signed at the appropriate level. What that level was I do not know, but there would never be multiple citations signed by multiple people for a single award.

I don't remember any time limit being spoken of,at all.

The idea was that the medals were still their's if they wanted them.

.

I thought they were traitors then and have never changed my mind.

The VVAW were in cahoots with Communists and all kinds of domestic terrorists of that time, and still are from what I can tell. They're crawling back out of the woodwork.

August 27, 2004

In the midst of the controversy between the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and Kerry campaign representatives about Kerry's service in Vietnam, new questions have arisen.

The Kerry campaign has repeatedly stated that the official naval records prove the truth of Kerry's assertions about his service.

But the official records on Kerry's Web site only add to the confusion. The DD214 form, an official Defense Department document summarizing Kerry's military career posted on johnkerry.com, includes a "Silver Star with combat V."

But according to a U.S. Navy spokesman, "Kerry's record is incorrect. The Navy has never issued a 'combat V' to anyone for a Silver Star."

Naval regulations do not allow for the use of a "combat V" for the Silver Star, the third-highest decoration the Navy awards. None of the other services has ever granted a Silver Star "combat V," either.

You know, really, I'm mostly just shaking my head at this all. My conclusions now are precisely what they have been a long time ago:

Sen.Kerry, PLEASE SIGN FORM 180 so we can stop all this senseless speculation!

Really, unless and until he does, this is going to fester and fester, and more and more VietNam vets and others are going to continue to ask these questions. It seems really weird he has not done so, and makes it really seem that there is something being hidden. I don't think that is a wise strategy, even if release of records shows there was some manipulation behind the scenes - then people will just do the "ho-hum- everyone does it" thing. These speculations, some of which are probably erroneous, make it all the worse for him. The longer this is in the news, the worse for him, even if he takes a short term hit in the initial records analysis. It's not going to get out of the news until that analysis is done, though. In fact, I've got an inkling of another angle that can easily be pursued that will further enlighten the American people as to just what some of the records on his website mean, to sKerry's detriment, and I'm just an ordinary joe officer... There's so much more that can be played on this story that I really don't think there's any way it is going out of the news soon, unless he signs that 180, and gets it out of the way.

Yes, but look at WHEN Kerry DEMANDED the four service stars be added!

March 12 2001!

So, had he worn campaign star BEFORE this date? And decided in 2001 to "straighten the record" and add them?

Now, consider WHEN he was actually in Vietnam:

1 April 69 - 5 May 69 (Offshore on USS Gridley, doing plane gueard and SAR duties.) One day in DaNang harbor driving a boat. Does Kerry actually consider THIS adequate to earn a "Tet offensive" campaign star?

The Gridley was away from Long Beach for longer than this, but these five weeks are the only time that Kerry was doing anything even "near" Vietnam.

Mid Nov 68 - 01 Dec 69 (training, but in-country)
01 Dec 68 - 17 Mar 70 (actual duty on the rivers)
17 Mar - 15 April (In country, but he had quit combat op, and was off the boats.)

So, what campaign ribbons did he "legitimately" earn, and what campaign stars were "exaggerations" to pad a record?

"Some of my fellow trainees on the train had more ribbons, ropes, and stripes then Westmoreland!...One guy had even morphed in to a 2nd Lt.!!"

LOL! I wondered earlier why J. Fraud Kerry didn't
buy himself a Navy Cross. ;o)

BTW, thank you for your service to our country.

He operates in the not-unreasonable belief that the media will cover for him somehow. Perhaps by making teh issue confusing enough that people lose patience with the story. Who knows, the media has lots of tricks to avoid honest reporting.

Kerry is a con-man. One of the biggest cons perpetrated on the public. I don't care if he releases his records or not. I want him to resign from public office. If the resignation is in disgrace, with documents made public to prove it, all the better -- but not necessary for me to get on with it.

Besides Kerry, there is the matter of restoring honor to US action in Vietnam, and making amends with Vietnam veterans.

I didn't hang around to hear about Bill Press's book, but from the bit I saw, it looked as if Pat Buchanan had wiped the floor with him over the Swifties.

That's my point. If Lehman doesn't know anything about this, that's an incriminating fact.

That's really wierd. If you scroll down on the Kerry website listing, you'll see links for "Bronze Star" and "Silver Star". The "Silver Star" link is where we've all been going for the last 5 months...and the Zumwalt cite is not there. We found it at findlaw.com back in April.

I don't remember that top link (with all his awards)being there before. Anyone know if that link has been added just lately??????

I couldn't get it to open. Is there any way to tell the date it was added to the website?

I don't think I've ever heard so many obvious lies coming out of a political campaign and its supporting cast of media whores.

PLEASE SIGN FORM 180

I still say Lehman could put a lot of pressure on Kerry.

Unlike a lot of the bit players in this story, Lehman certainly has good media contacts. He should call a press conference and firmly request that Kerry release the records which led to Lehman's signature on those citations. If he doesn't do it, write an op ed in the WaPo, etc. etc. etc.
