GOP Backs Away From Miller’s Blast

Democrat ‘speaking for himself,’ Bush aide says MSNBC and NBC News Updated: 9:26 p.m. ET Sept. 2, 2004

After gauging the harsh reaction from Democrats and Republicans alike to Sen. Zell Miller’s keynote address at the Republican National Convention, the Bush campaign — led by the first lady — backed away Thursday from Miller’s savage attack on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, insisting that the estranged Democrat was speaking only for himself.

Late Thursday, Miller’s name was removed from the list of dignitaries who would be sitting in the first family’s box during the president’s acceptance speech later in the evening. No explanation was immediately offered, but the change was made only a few hours after Laura Bush, asked about Miller’s deeply personal denunciation of his own party’s nominee, said in an interview with NBC News that “I don’t know that we share that point of view.”

Aides to President Bush and his campaign said Miller was not speaking for all Republicans.

Wednesday night, Miller delivered a fervent pro-Bush sermon that infuriated Democrats and left even some Republicans unsettled.

The Bush campaign stepped backed from Miller’s comments Thursday after it was received with almost immediate criticism, including complaints from prominent Republicans like Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

“Well, Zell Miller is a very experienced politician,” McCain, who spoke earlier at the convention, told NBC News on Wednesday night.

“I’m sure he knew exactly what he was talking about. [But] I just don’t agree with the fact that the Democrats are unpatriotic or the assertion that the Democrats are unpatriotic,” he said. “I don’t think they are.”

A senior White House official, speaking to reporters before Bush’s address Thursday night, said, “Senator Miller was speaking on behalf of himself and obviously on behalf of himself.”

Zell Miller is an angry Democrat. His party has drifted far left. No wonder he's angry!

Sometimes I get so tired of the Bushes always trying to be nice.

It's past time to take off the gloves.

GOP Backs Away from Miller's Blast

Nah. That's just the Party moving out of the way of the gigantic recoil.

Zell whapped em good with his double-barrel, right between the eyes.

Ummm... how does the truth about Kerry unsettle Republicans?

Furthermore, I never heard Zell actually DIRECTLY call Democrats "unpatriotic".

At least one man, Zell Miller, has the balls to speak the truth. I wish he would run for president in 2008. With Lt. gov. of Maryland Michael Steele.

"Late Thursday, Miller’s name was removed from the list of dignitaries who would be sitting in the first family’s box during the president’s acceptance speech later in the evening. "

This better not be true. The campaign can't back away from something they wrote. It just looks stupid.

Right! Keep dreaming, MSNBC. SCTV had more credibility.

This GOP wants to invite Zell to our table for dinner.

McCain really needs to STFU. Zell said NOTHING about anybody's patriotism. Hey McCain, put the Kool-Aid down and retire to AZ, a-hole.

I have not seen anyone backing away from Zell.

I saw the interview with Laura Bush, as usual MSNBC removed one remark from the context of what she said and twisted it to look like she was disagreeing with Senator Miller. MSNBC is despicable.

And I don't happen to agree with the fact that John McCain (D) is sane.

Republicans are wimps! My periodic checks now go the Swift Boat guys for sticking to their guns. Everytime I get a Republican solicitation for money, I send it back with a note that says, "check sent to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth". The Swift Boat vets get a lot more action for their buck than any Republican I know.
