The ULTIMATE GOP convention video thread (make CD's to hand out)

I'm going to give instructions here on how to capture the GOP convention video streams from the Fox News website. I'm also going to provide a playlist for them so you can just click on the one file and have them all play in order, with the ability to skip forward to the next talk.

The whole thing will fit on one CD. If you want, you can burn copies to hand out.

1. Go to www.xi-soft.com and download and install Net Transport (it's freeware)

2. Run Net Transport and click on the New Button (3rd button in the row of buttons below the menue bar).

3. In the dialog box that comes up, enter in the URL for 1 of the video files you want into the upper left field, then click OK. Repeat for all the video files you want to include. Note that further down on the left side you can set where the file will be saved on your hard drive.

5. Use Search and Replace to convert every [ into a < and every ] into a >. Save it in text format with a name of GOP.ASX

6. In the directory where you saved the WMV and the ASX files, create a directory named 'vid'. Move all the WMV files to the new directory.

Now if you open the ASX file, Windows Media Player should play them in order. You can burn the ASX file and the vid directory to a CD-R, and if you want to get real fancy, put an autostart file on the CD-R too (no, I'm not going to go into that)

The playlist will work even if you didn't download all the video files. If you know what you are doing, you can include other video files too, like the Matthews vs. Miller interview.

CD-R's are cheap, and handing out copies of this could reach those who didn't watch it on TV.

I think that Fred Thompson's intro is the best segue in the entire convention hands down.

Also, the files didn't catch it, but Bush's actual intro was friggin' awesome. The two lit up American flags crossing the stage. As they passed each other and created distance between the flags going in the opposite direction, President Bush comes walking directly out to the stage between the 2 flags

Friggin' awesome! The convention center went ballistic, but I think it looked even better at home.

Very dramatic, like at a concert when the performer all of the sudden appears.

To make it into a DVD, you would have to convert each WMV to an AVI file, the convert each AVI file to a DVD format file, then author the DVD menus etc and burn it to a DVD-R. You would have no increase in quality and it would take a lot of time and disk space. Making a VCD of it would only be a little less work.

I hope they put out a professional DVD of it, including all the videos they showed while setting up the stage for the next event.

Actually, it allows you to download the .wvx file, which is just the path to the stream, not the file itself. The .wvx file is only 1KB, so there shouldn't be any major restrictions. Sorry for any trouble.
