I don't think anyone with a conscience will ever forget where they were and what they were doing when the events of 9/11 unfolded. Me, I was in the American politics chatroom. I didn't have to work that day until 2pm and I woke up about 9:20 and the first thing I did was light a cigarette and log into chat. When I got there, one of the chatters said "Billy, did you hear about the plane that just crashed?" - I said No... and then i turned on FOX - just moments after I turned it on, I heard Shep Smith say "Was that ANOTHER plane????"
Man, my heart sank.
I don't know if this sounds morbid or whatever, but I sometimes wish someone would have logged the live chat so we can look back and read the things everyone was saying as we sat in that chatroom in shockened horror.
I did keep some links to a few threads on Free Republic that were going on as the events were happening. It still brings chills down my spine to read the comments, but lest we forget...

========
By the way, I always thought Shep Smith did one hell of a job covering the events that day. Of course at one time, after the second tower collapsed, his voice began to shake a little and he was obviously on the verge of tears. But like the rest of us, he is human. I wish I can get a transcipt of what he said that morning, because a few things stuck with me. One was the following... (I dont remember word for word, but he said something like this)
"And if you look over to the left of your screen, past the smoking towers, you can see the statue of Liberty standing tall... and i think this is symbolically important to see. She is still standing. And folks, we're going to get through this. One way or another, we're going to stand tall and get through this."
If anyone knows how to get a transcript, or better yet, the actual, uncut video of the Fox News broadcast from 9/11, please let me know.
Shep was great.
there was a thread on Sunday September 9, 2001 about how the FBI was shutting down certain Islamic websites in the U.S.A. I commented that it probably wasn't a bad idea because there were some that were recruiting terrorists.
Jim, any way to find threads from around that day? ... I can't remember any part of the title ... have no luck finding it.
the fbi removed those threads sept 15 from this site
There were still a lot open afterwards, though, and al Jazeera was in English as well as Arabic for some time. It was on or about that time that I stayed up one Saturday night, as I was on base on 9/11 and had returned home later in the week, when I became convinced that this is a Holy War.

See this thread.
you almost had me there ... for a sec!
I remember how dramatic that was ... two Fridays before (8/31), I was at dinner with a friend that night, and I told that I had just learned (probably on FR) that the 1993 WTC attack was to bring down both towers ...
he frantically called me several times the morning of 9/11 ... I wasn't going in until 10 that day so I had no idea ... when I finally answered the phone he told me to turn on the TV ... and there it was ... on the way in, I filled up my gas tank because I knew the lines would be crazy after work ... they were 3 blocks long ... and yes we had price-gougers in my area.
bump
I remember I couldn't get into ANY of the news orgs sites...only FR kept me informed, as my then wife was flying that day...
I can with all honor say that i think about or try not to think about sept 11 2001 everyday
I for one will never forget i was not there but it is forever seared in my mind
God Bless America
It was over 9/11 that I found free republic.
I was reading everyting that I could get my hands on.
I came and stayed..
Specifically, SamAdams76's reply at #16:
yes, it was a dramatic day ... and they're still working to do part II ... that bothers me even more.
I worked night shift the night before, I went home and scooped my dog up and went to the vets office.
If you are early you can usually get in and out. Later in the day you may sit for hours.
I got home right before 9 am and started fixing breakfast. I just happened to turn the radio on and heard that a plane had hit the world trade center.
I went in the den and turned on fox. I called my husband and he came in. We saw the second plane hit.
I didn't go to bed for 2 more days. I couldn't leave the TV. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It really is seared in my memory.
I'll never forget you, Don. :o(

man, that is messed up...
But, i do believe sometimes we all get feelings. Someone told me on monday, 9/10/01 that he was getting weird feelings all day and felt a lot of anxiety. Then he said he believed something was going to happen later that week that would be a "devestating day for America" - but he wasn't specific.
I blew it off at the time, but the next day, he was pretty much freaking out.
I remember once, telling a co-worker that Princess Dianna was going to be dead within a month. I don't know what or why I even said it. Like it came off the top of my head or something. I just said "You know, I dont know why, but i get this feeling that Princess Dianna is going to be dead within a month or so".
He told me "get the hell out of here".
About 10 days later... she was killed in that car wreck.
So I do believe there are things unexplained. I dont know why or how, but I think we all sometimes get a glimpse.... and then it's gone.
I just wish it would happen with the lotto numbers.
That post is just stunning.
Here's the spookiest TV show ever. Remember how Fox tried to spinoff the "Lone Gunmen" from "The X Files" into their own series? It didn't last long, but the pilot episode, which aired March 4, 2001, was about a secret government plot to crash a remote-controlled Boeing 727 into the WTC and blame it on terrorists.
I still have very vivid dreams that I will log every now and then. Many times they involve airplanes or heights. A recent dream had me climbing one of those radio towers to change a lightbulb. For some reason, it fell upon me to change this lightbulb so I started scaling this 500 foot radio tower. I remember looking down on a major highway (Rte 128?) hundreds of feet below and feeling myself losing control and falling off the tower. Fortunately I woke up before I hit the ground!
The day of 9/11 I remember very well. It will likely be my "JFK moment" as I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard about the towers in New York. I even remember what I was doing that morning before I heard the news. I remember is was one of those perfect late summer days. Deep blue skies and low humidity. On my way to work that morning, my mind was on the Patriots (they lost their season opener a couple of days before) and on the excellent fishing trip I had in Gloucester that previous weekend. I was thinking about going fishing one more time the following weekend (obviously it never happened).
I left work early that day (along with everybody else) and I'll never forget the shock of seeing an F-15 streaking across the sky overhead. Aside from that, the skies were totally empty of air traffic. That was an eerie sight. That evening, I drove to the gas station to fill both my cars up with gas (didn't know what else was in store for us) and I actually put together some emergency supplies in case we had to quickly leave our house and head for the hills. I had the feeling that day that life would never be the same again.
But it did go back to being the same again. Thanks to President Bush and our fine troops, the war has been taken to the other side of the ocean and it has stayed there ever since. Frankly, I'm amazed that we were never hit again. I thought for sure, in the days after 9/11, that we were going to have additional terrorist attacks in this country.
I've seen this floating around various P2P networks. Bootlegs are regularly put up for sale on eBay as well.
I dont understand that... 12/31/ 1969????????
You're not getting 9/11/2001 threads with that URL?

Bobby777,
I just realized that I should have directed my comment in #23 of this thread to you. I pinged PatriotEdition instead. That link will take you back to the very first articles posted on 9/11 about the towers, and from there you can work your way back to the day of your article of interest. I found that the last number in the address bar turns out to be the first article shown in that list of articles posted and they go backwards in chronological order from it, top to bottom. By manipulating that number, you can go forward or backwards in time to whenever you want. Kinda Neat.
John Robinson told me that he was thinking about adding the capability to search for a particular date in this manner but I guess he never got around to doing it.
thanks, I had some luck moving around but couldn't find the article I was looking for. I remember posting on it that day but I don't know if it was posted the previous day or not. Got tired after an hour of searching, LOL.
it's more of a curiosity thing. I just remember a post where the FBI was shutting down Islamic web sites and while I said I was for freedom of religion I believed them that several were recruiting terrorists. As we saw confirmed two days later.
thanks!
After the first Trade Center Bombing in '93 (or so) when I saw where the bomb was placed in the basement of the one building, I told my boys that they seemed like they wanted to bring the one building down and use it like a bowling pin to bring down the other building. I asked them if they could imagine how many people would have been killed if they could have brought even the one building down. It was a scary thought.
I shuddered and thought on the day they rammed the planes into them that if they had crashed into them down low there would have been many many multiples of 3000 dead. The buildings probably would have come down almost immediately. I still hate to think about it.
When they announced that the Pentagon had been hit on 9/11, I turned to the people in my office where we were all listening and said..."It's time to kick some a$$." And today, I'm glad we did. Go Dubya.
Maybe you can do the same type of search in your comments to find it that way. It would probably be easier to find your comment than to find the article. I think they use the same method there where the last number represents the top comment on that page.
Good Luck. I'm glad it worked (somewhat) for you.
I remember that day I was at work (we start at 6:30am). Maintenance guy who was also an Army Reserve MSgt, came in and told me about a jet hitting the WTC. As we were discussing it, we got word that a second plane hit the other one. The Army reserve guy, another supervisor (Marine veteran) and myself (Air Force veteran) all looked at each other and knew that a deliberate, planned attack had been initiated by someone. We had two consultant/specialists that had scheduled to work with us that day on some projects but our minds were not focused as we considered the ramifications of the news we had heard. Shortly there after we got word that the buildings had collapsed and were wondering how long before America started mobilizing to counter the threat. We knew we weren't going to have to wait very long!
yes, it did. fortunately or unfortunately; as the case may be...
