Israel may propose landmark security cooperation with Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is to hold talks Monday with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon , amid media reports that in the wake of the Beslan tragedy, Israel is to propose unprecedented anti-terrorism security cooperation with Russia, including sharing of sensitive intelligence data.

"I believe we have to draw lessons from this appalling crime," Lavrov said. "Terrorism can be stopped only by uniting efforts of all the states. Russia will fight this evil resolutely and uncompromisingly in the framework of the anti-terrorist coalition. We hope that the solidarity with our country shown by our partners will become a driving force behind the worldwide struggle against this scourge of the 21st century."

Asked whether Russia is continuing the Soviet Union's traditional pro-Arab policy, he responded: "Russia's policy is neither pro-Arab nor pro-Israeli. It is directed at securing Russian national interests. Among those is the maintenance of close, friendly ties both with Arab countries and Israel."

I would even be concerned, but Israel is nobody's fool.

I don't see how Russia could continue helping Iran obtain nuclear material, while having a close alliance with Israel.

I think Russia will need to choose and hopefully this agreement means they are choosing right: Israel.

Yes. Interesting indeed. Iran and Syria will not be happy campers having the Russians meeting with their sworn enemies.

Wouldn't it be just really amusing, if Russia and Israel would bomb Iran and Syria's WMD facities?

Well, that's that.

Russia is choosing the Israeli "swarming" strategy instead of the U.S.'s hyper-war strategy. Both strategies are extremely effective, but the Israeli strategy costs less.

This means that there is a new player in the game of targeted assasinations worldwide. It means that regions will be occupied. It means that cities will be subdivided, swarmed, and cleared house to house...

...Doesn't look too good for Iran getting much Russian backing in the future, either.

"Israel is to propose unprecedented anti-terrorism security cooperation with Russia, including sharing of sensitive intelligence data."

Daniel said something very interesting about what such an alliance might bring.

Not sure it will come to that but Iran stuck a finger in Russia's eye when it refused to return the NUCLEAR that Russia provided them.

It does seem that the armies of the world are gathering together around that piece of real estate.

The pressure is building and who knows what will trigger a world reaction.

Well, if I were Israel I'd keep a few aces in the hole, but this does sound promising. The very idea that Russia would say it views Israel on a similar basis as Arab states is a vast improvement over decades of taking the Arabs side almost exclusively.

The headlines in some of the middle-east Arab newspapers what even more shocking IMO. Perhaps they have finally figured out that the west and even Russia will only take so damn much. Yes, the terrorists are all Moslems.

Who'd a thunk it?

I think the days of Iran and Syria's terrorist supporting, WMD manufacturing days are numbered.

If Russia seriously joins the US coalition -- and by this cooperative agreement with Israel, they are doing exactly that, Iran and Syria should start being afraid, very afraid.

And people are also starting to figure out, that diplomacy is not the answer, but force is.

I share your views expressed in thirteen and fourteen.

I am somewhat leary of Putin, but I do want a close relationship with Russia. I believe their and our future is going to be better if we can work closely together.

I would also love to see us move a lot of our Chinese exchange to Russia. Russia has gotten rather pragmatic IMO. Yes they've made overtures to China, but I think Russia is much more prone to modify it's stance towards us than China is.

We should reward them for the moves they have made in the last decade.

Many Russian Jews immigrated to Israel during the collapse. It wouldn't suprise me that Israel and Russia will be cooperating on security measures. Arab states use Russia for weapons. Not much more.

Sorry, don't trust Israel. They are even cozying up to China. They seem to try to curry favor with ANYONE.
