'60 Minutes' Documents on Bush Might Be Fake
(CNSNews.com) - The 32-year-old documents produced Wednesday by the CBS News program "60 Minutes," shedding a negative light on President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard, may have been forged using a current word processing program, according to typography experts. Three independent typography experts told CNSNews.com they were suspicious of the documents from 1972 and 1973 because they were typed using a proportional font, not common at that time, and they used a superscript font feature found in today's Microsoft Word program. More to Come
I want to see Dan Rather eat some crow!
They are not in the style that we used when I came in to the USAF. They looked like the style and format we started using about 12 years ago (1992). Our signature blocks were left justified, now they are rigth of center...like the ones they just showed.
Can we get a copy of those memos?
From the live thread last night!
I still have to thank the people on this board for their hard work on this issue. Very interesting techniques and very informative.
I was suspicious of the forgery claims, but I've read just about everything there is to read about it and from what I've seen it's starting to look like this may be a Watergate moment for CBS. It's already breaking on semi-mainstream news sites. If independent experts can confirm these documents were fake, Dan Rather is going to be toast.
Yea, except he seems to have pegged powerline's server
Damn. This story has legs!
If you can't run with the big dogs, work for CBS!
Re your question, this is what I do:
1. Write letters to the editors.
2. E-Mail articles from Free Republic around to friends in my e-mail address book. A lot of people only get or see the Old Media stuff and they LOVE the new media. (When I e-mail I copy and paste the article itself, not all the comments because people like to print the articles out to share with their friends).
Think about it. We e-mail an article out to 20 people in our address book. They e-mail it out to their friends. And so on.
Rush is reporting on the possibility of fake documents now.
Bump for legs - on the story of course.
Dan Rather was humiliated by Dubya's Dad and he's going to be humiliated now.
My advice to Dan Rather is to STAY OUTTA DA BUSHES!!

And it's not even a third over with yet! ;-)
Folks it appears that this story is getting some big legs and my be ready to run... Drudge is now running it out on his site.... using documentation from power line with people who have done a simmalar disection of the font.... Me thinks that dan ratherbiased and his crew of 60 mins have been exposed. This is another fine example of yellow journalism at its best from 60 mins. But if those of us that the MSM think don't know any better can keep proving them wrong maybe things will change. (I can hope.)
Rush just mentioned it on his show about three minutes ago.

What did you know and when did you know it?
Excellent post. Companies are not in the business of funding political lies and propaganda smears and thereby alienating their customer base.
If this is true it's all over for the Dems on 11/3---yes democrats can vote on nov 3rd only
The citizen's media watchdog!
A suitable typewriter did exist at the time, but that will not be the end of the questions. We need to see the original documents, and others from the same office.
Great job to all the Freepers who put in the work to uncover this!
AND NOW IT'S TIME TO KEEP ON PUSHING AND GIVE LEGS TO THE FALSE "BOO'S" STORY BY THE AP!!
It's time to do everything humanly possible to be sure that the old timey, Media Wing of the DemonRat Party is thoroughly discredited. And that it is so damaged by this election that it can NEVER recover again!
"But HOW do we get the word out about the fraud beyond the world of the Internet?"
Just look how many hits Drudge has had in the last 24 hours alone! As far as we are concerned, we can write our local papers, tell our friends and neighbors, print off copies of these stories and show others....etc.
VISITS TO DRUDGE 9/09/04
010,950,881 IN PAST 24 HOURS
255,225,309 IN PAST 31 DAYS
It's been an amazing morning. It's an amazing time to live.

It wasn't me who put ANY work into this matter, but a lot of freepers did and Kudos to them!
Way to keep it bumped, Howlin!!!
See BS ain't See BS for nothing.......
Rather will claim it was a double-Watergate and a secret Bush agent switched the files.
Great job on that memo!
In a sane world, THIS would have been the end of him.
Those that did the legwork on this and the AP story deserve high praise! Dan Rather ought to turn over his check to you.
Connie Chung would never have let this happen.
This would be both slander and libel - the interview on television is slander, and forged military lies are libel.
However, forging military documents that "supposedly" came from the Pentagon is going to get someone decades in the brig.
It makes me wonder.....is Sandy Berger singing to save his a$$?
**Rather will claim it was a double-Watergate and a secret Bush agent switched the files.**
Yes, and Danny boy will get all of that from his secret DNC decoder ring!!

I don't think CBS would deliberately perpetrate such a hoax-at least one that could be so easily exposed. The real tantalizing question is what will they do next? Admit it and apologize? Blame the Bush campaign for planting it? My guess is they bury both stories and pretend it never happened.
There's disputing accounts of whether IBM (or other) typewriters at the time could make the fonts and typefaces (if there's a difference between the two) at that time.
What I want to know from those that allege any typewriter could not make such typefaces, or that the post Bush was at wouldn't have the machines that could, can you say that to an absolute degree of certainty, and how exactly do you base your personal knowledge of this?
Not meaning to make this into a question of credibility, but I would like to, on this thread, separate speculation from fact as much as possible.
Dan RatherNot is sooooooooooooooo Busted!
Ooooooooooo You're bad......
The mainstream media would spend all kinds of efforts to analyze and discredit the swiftboat veteran's credible and documented multiple eyewitness accounts and yet would run with an obvious forgery if it dicredited Bush in some way. I hope this hoax is exposed and CBS and the other media hypocrits are made to look like idiots.
Word processors did not exist at that time, all there was were typewriters, the IBM selectric with the type ball was state of the art. Each character has the same ammount of width on the page with a typewriter, proportional space and superscript (with smaller characters) proves its a forgery...
Like a said last night, Howlin, your enthusiasm, commitment and energy are admirable...even though you won't get the recognition you deserve, I'd like to say THANK YOU!!!
