On Guard
Washington Post ^ | September 10, 2004 | Howard Kurtz

There are two media camps in America today: one that is digging into Col. Jerry Killian's memos and examining what typewriter fonts were in use in 1972 and parsing Ben Barnes's statements about National Guard admissions, and one that is not.

George Bush received an honorable discharge from the Guard--that much is not in dispute. Everything else--including whether the documents "60 Minutes" obtained are authentic--seems to be in play.

I wonder when one of the big name columnist/journalist is going to discuss the real issue... the MSM has lost all objectivity and the public is waking up to this reality.

If that is not in dispute why the debate? Kerry has said that just because you received an honorable discharge doesn't mean you completed your service. It that true? Seems to me if Bush was honorably discharged then there should be no story.

A sad effort from Kurtz, in the "if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance" mode. This is a major journalistic scandal.

Agreed. Kurtz tries to discuss this in light of the Swiftboat Vets allegations and the politics of the general election. That's irrelevant. This story is about one thing: CBS has published a story that relies on fraudelent documents. Now deal with that story.

Here’s a ‘copyright-ready’ cartoon you can email out, post on other blogs, put on posters... anything noncommercial!

This is a MAJOR media scandal. Combined with the daughter of Ben Barnes (appearing on Hannity today) saying her daddy is LYING about using his influence to get Bush into the Texas National Guard... well, that's two Big Ones against CBS and Dan Rather. Back to back stories, both soundly trounced within the same week as airing. That's major.

And he misses the obvious difference -- not a single Bush spokesman used the Swift Boat vets allegations to hammer Kerry with. Yet all the Democrats spent all day yesterday bashing Bush with the fraudulent 60 Minutes allegations.
