Free Republic Broke This Story?

Posted on 09/10/2004 2:40:58 PM PDT by Without Barbarians

A poster claims that Free Republic somehow broke the story about the Bush documents being fakes. Will someone who actually knows the story please post or email me the details concerning this.

Keep going.

Today's Weekly Standard mention a freeper breaking the story.

So did ABC's The Note.

I think National Review had an article about it last night as well.

Check the Live thread on the 60 Minutes segment and you will find that Howlin first noticed that the documents looked suspicious. She then started a thread when the docs became available. I believe Post 47 was the first to nail it. (Sorry, I don't have the time to search and link the threads.)

Not only that, but I had it pegged as a media hit by post 2 of the thread on the original story =)

I'm not sure we broke the story as much as we started the story. This is the first place that noted the obvious forgeries. From there it exploded and despite the efforts of CBS, it cannot be contained.

From the article:
The Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site — the 47th posting on the topic there.

Post No. 47 pointed out that there was something off about these documents from the 1970s: The spacing between the letters and the words was proportional, and only a few IBM electric typewriters could achieve that effect back then.

From there it was off to the races. Once anyone who had had experience writing and typing in the 1970s began examining the documents, it was impossible not to see some weird anachronisms that suggested they had been crafted not on a 1970s typewriter, but using Microsoft Word.

From John Podhoretz's column in today's New York Post.

"Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blogs readers directed their attention to a note left on the internet board at the freerepublic.com web site. The 47th posting on the topic there.

Who is that mysterious 47th poster who may have cost John Kerry the election?. Inquiring minds want to know? (my comment)

Yeah, there were a few people involved...because I specifically remember KCTanker/TankerKC and Howlin talking about it on the live thread at 8:19pm.
