I knew a marine who was wounded in WW2 in the Pacific. Took a jap 25 cal bullet to the leg.

He's deceased but seems when I was a child he kept singing the praises of a general.

I always thought it was Chesty something or other.

I guess this is the guy.

As someone in the biz I can tell you that the only way this will happen will be if an A list actor or director gets on board. Half of a film's revenues come from overseas. The foreign market will not buy a US military film without a Gibson or a Willis on board. A talent like a Jim Woods won't carry it.

For example: the only way an Iwo Jima film will happen is because of Hanks and Spielberg.

For my money, I'd rather see a movie about Harold Schrier.

Outstanding. Now the big step: get a script written, actors and director that won't f*ck it all up and make him into something that he wasn't.

As an aside- I found out today that Don Adams, 'Agent 86' of 'Get Smart' fame, was a US Marine- on Guadalcanal.

For you non-Jarheads, that's impressive as all hell. He was evac'ed with some sort of evil tropical disease.

I can imagine him flinging grenades at Japanese positions, turning around and with his fingers an inch apart saying, "Missed it by that much." Rock on, Don!

Lee Marvin was shot on one of the Islands, shot in the butt! Must have hurt!

I forgot which battle, but it was one of the big ones.

Didn't he have a bit part in Sands of Iwo Jima where he portrayed himself?

Almost EVERYBODY on Guadalcanal came down with malaria.

Harvey Keitel kind of looks like Chesty.

Makeup could make Willis look like him.

Maybe Diniro

Harold Schrier led the patrol up Suribachi and survived the entire battle to show up as himself (with dialog) in the movie. What is not generally known is that he also earned a Silver Star five years later in Korea during the breakout from the Chosin Resevoir (The Frozen Chosin),...a hero in the two most famous USMC fights of the 20th Century.

Tarawa, where Eddie Albert spent D-Day working the lagoon rescuing wounded Marines, the whole time under close enemy fire. They worked together a decade later in the movie ATTACK!.

Just got off the red-eye from LA....allow for an error or two. The info about Eddie Albert is true though.

I've written a couple of military screenplays that have gained recognition but will not be produced for the marketing reasons I gave in an earlier post...if the foreign market won't go for it, it won't get made unless a true A list Actor or Director gets behind it and pushes. Very frustrating.
