Johnny Ramone, member of punk legends The Ramones, dies at 55
LOS ANGELES (AP) Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band The Ramones, has died. He was 55.
Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs I Wanna be sedated and Blitzkrieg Bop, among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
The bands singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.
Johnny Ramone founded The Ramones in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.
Oh, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Gentle Giant, and so on. (Prog-rock had its commercial heyday well before the Clash.)

Eeeew that brand sucks. I NEVER listen to such as that.
If you have Radio@AOL, just tune to the Ramones station. All Ramones, all the time!
Not as much as Strummer.
Smithers, take a note. Have the Rolling Stones killed.
Progressive Rock originated with the Beatles (White Album etc) although I think Yes would be considered the first Progressive Rock Band. Prog-rock still exists (Dream Theater, Radiohead). Prog-rock rides that fine line between cool and self indulgent. ELP falls off into self-indulgent more than Yes. Lots great bands fall into the category (King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, even the Buggles) but a lot of unlistenable stuff flies the Prog-rock flag.
I jumped in this in the middle how the heck did a thread about the death of a member of the Ramones turn the corner to Progressive Rock?
Its a strange strange world we live in, Master Jack
Comparing the Clash to the Ramones is like comparing a Hot Fudge Sundae to an Electric Garage Door Opener - they are not even remotely similar.
justshutupandtakeit argued that the Clash were far superior to the Ramones because, "Talent is the greatest factor in good music." I said it's that sort of thinking that leads to progressive rock, which justshutupandtakeit hates. (I actually like a fair bit of prog-rock ... Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis ... but none as much as I like the Ramones.)
I guess so, hell, I never heard of him.
Did I actually type a spiel about Progressive Rock and not mention Pink Floyd - SHAME ON ME. Actually Pink Floyd came before Yes. In the words of Emily Litella "Nevermind"
The Ramones were a fun band for the most part with the political leanings of the Beach Boys. Actually that is not true - the Ramones had there political moments (the Clash were leftist political from the start). To be honest, on second thought, maybe my entire analogy is wrong - although I did enjoy my Hot Fudge Sundae and Electric Garage Door Opener analogy - next time I will apply it where it fits.
In my mind I think the Ramones and the Clash are like apples and oranges but there is lots of weird stuff that goes on in my mind. I see the Ramones as the core of punk rock energy - straight-forward, balls-to-the-wall, bang out the power chords rock (the Punk movement from the pure musical side) I see the Clash as one giant political statement (the Punk movement as a political statement ).
I see the Sex Pistols as the Punk movement from a pure publicity side - they were a gimmick from the beginning. I am a big fan of the Sex Pistols - nothing beats when you are feeling a bit psychotic and you get into the car and put on Never mind the bullocks and try to hit pedestrians (figuratively of course).
Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
I'll go along with that. I guess I find them easier to compare because I've learned to tune out the Clash's political lyrics. (And, then, not all of their lyrics are overtly political; "London's Burning" is perhaps pre- or proto-political.)
>>>> My 3 and 5 year old daughters will rarely let me drive anywhere without playing the Ramones.
My three year old son LOVES the Pixies. I have a concert DVD of them and not only does he sing along, he mimics the whole show with an improvised "microphone stand" and toy guitar.
He makes me play the cds in the car ... when he hears Kim's bass rift he gets really excited and screams "Thats Kim playing bass guitar!" He likes the Dead Kennedy's too (an old favority -- I now hate their message but still confess to loving the music).
Glad to see I am not the only one "warping" my kid!
Uh, they both play rock and or roll. Your analogy is wildly inappropriate.
Now comparing Blind Lemon Jefferson to Igor Stravinsky might work.
The Cowsills and Marilyn Mason both play rock and roll - are they analogous?
Billy Haley and the Comets and Slipknot both play rock and roll are they analogous?
The Bay City Rollers and Yes both play rock and roll are they analogous?
My analogy was: their motivations were very different (although I have already retracted my first analogy)

Sorry about the double post. All this retracting has got me confused - now I know how John Kerry feels.
