Hawass is very irritating, and I don't regard him as a real archaeologist, but I do appreciate what a scary tightrope walk he has to do with a growing (and Saudi-financed) Islamofascist militia in the country, like the ones who gunned down those tourists at Luxor (the ones who didn't flee in time, and ran out of ammo, were dealt with by the local population, without any "fair trial" or "due process" -- unless group retribution beatings qualify) a few years back. When he announced an educational book for Egyptian children, regarding pharaonic times -- to Islam, part of "the time of ignorance" -- I joked with an online friend / historian that I figured it would be a car bomb. :') Often he seems to blow up (figuratively), and kick people off sites, even out of the country, but generally makes up with them when he needs some new publicity, new money, or whatnot.
