President's campaign uses optimism to attract - Strategy mines power of positive talk

.........Democrats have taken note of Bush’s recent campaign strategies.

They are trying to portray Bush’s optimism as obliviousness. In recent days, Kerry and running mate John Edwards have hit Bush hard on the loss of jobs under his administration; accused the president of lying about progress in Iraq; and accused Bush of ignoring rising violence in US cities.

Yesterday the Democratic Party began running a new television advertisement, showing Bush on an aircraft carrier under a ‘‘Mission Accomplished’’ banner, and a clip of the president saying, ‘‘The economy is strong.’’ The ad asks, ‘‘How can you solve problems when you won’t even admit they’re there?’’

Bush aides say the president’s optimism is warranted, given positive signs that Democrats are ignoring.

They say his demeanor presents a stark contrast with Kerry, particularly as Kerry’s attacks on the president grow more shrill.

‘‘John Kerry says the economy is terrible and I have no plan to

make it better,’’ Ken Mehlman, Bush’s campaign manager, said to reporters Wednesday.

Bush’s demeanor is upbeat, his language uplifting; the president used a variation on the word ‘‘hope’’ seven times in St. Cloud and said ‘‘safe’’ six times. He selectively recounts statistics for maximum effect, for example, referencing the speedy economic growth rate in the third quarter of last year without noting that it dropped by nearly two-thirds in the most recent quarter.

‘‘You tell folks out there that our economy is growing at rates as fast as any in nearly 20 years, that we’ve added 1.7 million new jobs since August of last year, that the national unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, below the average rate of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s,’’ he said on the economy.

‘‘Our strategy is succeeding. It’s succeeding,’’ Bush said, talking about foreign policy........

He's following the Reagan philosophy. Americans, (at least the majority) love their country and respond positively to optimism and hope about it's future.

Now they see the 'rats as being nothing but "a real pill".

Kerry is a super dud.

‘‘The images on the television about Iraq are accentuating the violence. If that continues, and if the negative] economic numbers continue, it’s going to be harder for him to stay on this message of optimism.’’

TV is slanted, the economy is good and there is a typo. Being optimistic is a weird concept to liberals.

We are fortunate to have a GREAT LEADER RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION!!! We are also fortunate to have a roaring ECONOMY, and have you noticed how many terrorists we have been KILLING lately. I have FIVE FRIENDS in IRAQ right now, and they said we are WINNING the WAR, and IRAQI's are starting to PULL THEIR WEIGHT!

To believe lurch and girlie-boy, you have to believe that EVERYTHING that made AMERICA GREAT, is EVERYTHING that makes AMERICA bad. The dims are known liars, forgers, theives, and appeasers. That is why the MAJORITY of AMERICANS are REJECTING them and their message!!!

Kerry and running mate John Edwards have hit Bush hard on the loss of jobs under his administration;

Our economy was attacked, morons.

Most of America realizes that and doesn't buy into this tired, out-of-date rhetoric...

accused Bush of ignoring rising violence in US cities.

Isn't crime at a 30 year low? The only violent people I've seen in the streets lately were anti-Bush protestors.

Or as the Democrats call it, "a complete lack of interest in science".

Of course, by this, they mean he won't subject the USA to a multi-trillion dollar carbon dioxide tax, and he thinks that individuals should find commercial uses for baby parts without the government's help.

An individual, acting in their rational self interest, is unlikely to finance a manned mission to Mars.

Exactly. Its a very uplifting message in these difficult times. We all have problems in our lives without needing to hear that its our fault or that things can't get better. We need to hear we can over come anything and that America's best days are still ahead of her. That's where President Bush is connecting with the American people. We are an exceptional country and in spite of all the bad news we are hearing, in many ways we are better than the rest of the world. Not superior but better. Its a theme the Democrats and their water carriers in the partisan media don't get but it ties into the American character. Look at the flaws this country had and how far we've traveled in our history in realizing the promise of the American Founding. Granted, we're not perfect as God surely knows but we're always in search of that shining city on the hill and should we fall short in finding it, we know our children and grandchildren will. The American Dream lives on.

Once again, we must be ignorant (or stupid), therefore must be led.

Liberals see America as stuck in the 30s Great Depression and its people are helpless to make it without their benevolent intervention. They must be led to see things the way liberals see them.
