[history]
WASHINGTON It was the first public allegation that CBS News used forged memos in its report questioning President Bush's National Guard service a highly technical explanation posted within hours of airtime citing proportional spacing and font styles.
But it did not come from an expert in typography or typewriter history as some first thought. Instead, it was the work of Harry MacDougald, an Atlanta lawyer with strong ties to conservative Republican causes and who helped draft the petition urging the Arkansas Supreme Court to disbar President Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Los Angeles Times has found.

..........a highly technical explanation posted within hours of airtime citing proportional spacing and font styles. "highly technical" ?????
It seems that Peter Wallsten, cub reporter, is too young to have ever typed on a monospace typewriter.

Well, that changes everything!
Now that Buckhead is a "GOP linked attorney", the forged documents are now magically authentic.

Perhaps the demo-people would feel better if Buckhead was just an elderly gentleman and his wife, traveling in their car in Florida on a trip to see their grandchildren, and just happened to have their laptop in an active wireless zone, and picked up the freerepublic vibrations. They would listen in....etc etc.

OMG! A Republican attorney! On a conservative website, no less! OMG it's a conspiracy!
This has to be quite possibly the silliest story I've heard out of Memogate yet. A member of FR, a *gasp* Republican? Who'd have thunk it?
Sheesh. I get better investigative reporting from my four year old who tells me what's going on with my ex wife.

When are they going to disclose how Buckhead got CBS to put the "forged documents" on the net, so he could discover the discrepancies?
lol, these guys are such idiots. I can't even believe they are trying to place the blame on Buckhead because he's a Republican.

Why is this "news"? Not your posting, but the search for the man who first noticed the forgeries and his background?
It certainly seems the press is trying to bring back the "Rove planted these forgeries" argument...though as we've seen before by those floating the Rove conspiracy theory, the Seattle Times isn't completely willing to acknowledge teh documents are fakes either. Talk about hedging your bets.

a highly technical explanation What a crock. This lie is being repeated enough that it's becoming accepted as full-blown truth. Did the reporter even read Buckhead's posting?

Funny how libs are doing a public service when they uncover something; but conservatives MUST have some hidden, insidious agenda. That's basically the impression I have gotten over the coverage.

He could be (just to coin an extreme example) a bestialist who rides from sheepfold to sheepfold to rustle his conquests, and that still wouldn't make
overcopied, crumpled-up Microsoft Word documents into genuine Vietnam-era military memoranda. As the old Texas news hack would say, "with respect, deal with the facts".

Well, let me just say I am from Texas originally though I live in NY now, and my daughter is active in state politics. I'm well known in media circles, and I unfortunately was just caught passing forged documents off as the real thing in order to bring down a sitting president.
Hope that doesn't give away my rather private identity.
