Bill Burkett, the man identified yesterday by CBS as the source of the controversial documents used in its September 8 "60 Minutes II" report questioning President Bush's Air National Guard service, plans to sue the network, according to Mr. Burkett's former lawyer, David Van Os.

The CBS statement said: "Burkett ... admits that he deliberately misled the CBS News producer working on the report, giving her a false account of the documents' origins to protect a promise of confidentiality to the actual source."

Mr. Rather attached a statement to the CBS News release, saying, "I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers."

Mr. Van Os, the lawyer, said in a telephone interview with The New York Sun that his former client had "several meetings with lawyers to determine the best course of action." He said the planned lawsuit would center on what he termed "defamation of character and libel."

Just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser...
Oh my heavens, who knew there would be, in good old Texas, a putz with such chutzpah!
Oh, this is sweet. He should sue Rather personally - for mucho dinero.

Morning Jim, It's another GREAT DAY in America!~
Rather Lied, Kerry Died...

Now the battle of the lawyers ...
This is outstanding. He should sue the DNC too.
Truth is always a defense against libel.
This "character" doesn't stand a chance in court, but it's a way for CBS to pay him for services rendered by "settling out of court".
The DNC=Dan Ratter=CBS=john kerry=Communist un-American GI-American-murderers...may they rot in that special place in hell that 'cut and run' kerry says is reserved for Sodom, the man whose water he carries. These people must be STOPPED and the ballot box is where we start.
SeeBS/Rather will settle, or Burkett will be overwhelmed by depression and do himself in. (wink, wink)
The Plot Thickens, and gets better....
WOW...what a twist! I would have never imagined this the day after the "apology". Geez.
That's kind of Game Over right there, if'n you ask me.
This is getting better every minute!
;-)
Burkett no doubt had multiple contacts with the Kerry campaign, as well as the DNC. This is a handy way for CBS to "settle" with Burkett (all perfectly legal, of course) and the sum will be "undisclosed."
This solution was probably dreamed up by John Edwards.
This is just so much FUN to watch unravel!!!!! That is what you get when you hang out with unscrupulous people--they all turn on each other when the deal goes south. We WILL get the truth eventually because they will each spill their guts to blame someone else.
