Burkett has now disclosed he had previously falsely identified the source of the forged documents as a former Texas National Guard friend, George Conn. CBS had claimed it had an unimpeachable source who clearly could not of been Burkett. If it was George Conn, CBS again has shown its utter failure of investigating reporting and/or its bias.
George Conn denied to the Boston Globe in February 0f 2004 that Burkett's stories were true. CBS needs to name their un-impeachable source!

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Burkett, who has been pressing his charges in the national news media this week, says he even heard one high-ranking officer issue a 1997 order to sanitize the Bush file, and later saw another officer poring over the records and discovered that some had been discarded.
But a key witness to some of the events described by Burkett has told the Globe that the central elements of his story are false.
George O. Conn, a former chief warrant officer with the Guard and a friend of Burkett's, is the person whom Burkett says led him to the room where the Bush records were being vetted. But Conn says he never saw anyone combing through the Bush file or discarding records. "I have no recall of that," Conn said. "I have no recall of that whatsoever. None. Zip. Nada."
Conn's recollection also undercuts another of Burkett's central allegations: that he overheard Bush's onetime chief of staff, Joe M. Allbaugh, telling a Texas Guard general to make sure there were no embarrassments in the Bush record.
Burkett says he told Conn, over dinner that same night, what he had overheard. But Conn says that, although Burkett told him he worried that the Bush record would be sanitized, he never mentioned overhearing the conversation between Allbaugh and General Daniel James III.
According to Burke, Conn asked Scribner what he was doing and Scribner replied that he was looking through Bush's records. Burkett said Conn and Scribner then briefly left him alone, and that he saw some pages of Bush's military records in a trash can near Scribner's desk.
Conn contradicts most of Burkett's rendition. He said that he remembers introducing Burkett to Scribner at the museum but that Scribner never said he was going over the Bush file. "If he had said he was going through George W. Bush's records I would have dropped my teeth. Wow," Conn said. "I would definitely have remembered that. I don't recall that at all."
Burkett also says that, before the encounter with Scribner, he was standing with a group of Guard officers, and heard a ranking officer order Scribner to review the Bush file and remove any documents that might be embarrassing to the then-governor.

Dan Rather considers Bill Clinton to be an un-impeachable source.
That's the big question. Is CBS expecting us to forget that Dan used the phrase "unimpeachable"? If so, no one in their right mind would use it about Burkett. Wonder if anyone will dig deep enough.
Conn is not doing interviews.
Also, what's up with Burkett saying he burned, in the Kinko's parking lot, the copies of the documents given to him by Lucy Rameriz? Not believable.
Perhaps Dan has been talking with Hillary's friend, Eleanor Roosevelt.

I knew Rove and his fellow trolls were diabolical, but I never knew just how good they were until today. I tried catching bits and pieces of several news shows on most of the cable channels and every show talked about how this is going to, or already has, sunk Dan Rather's career and the credibility of CBS news. And you can see everyone's eyes sparkling with joy!! What a great story! "Oh, it's a dark day for journalism, but god I'm having an orgasm."

"Lucy Ramirez" is obviously not a real person. A woman using that name called Burkett, and arranged a meet. But she never showed up at the meet. Instead, a man passed Burkett the papers. I would not be surprised if the RNC were behind this--passing crude forgeries in an effort to discredit the Bush AWOL story.

Lucy Ramirez in 2000 was the woman who gave Repigs Gore's... tape of his debate speech. She worked for the bush campaign. The whole thing was that she was set up by karl rove, but was forced to take the blame and was fired. Much like Dan Rather is taking the blame and he was only the messanger.

And here's the guy, Roger Stone, who is the link Stone and Rove go way, way back to Reagan and Lee Atwater, may be the source of the documents. This is the same guy who organized and paid the Miami Mob during the recount and then went on to join Al Sharpton's campaign. Folks if this is true, we have a direct link to the WH.

I don't listen to anything Dan Rather says anymore, but according to FoxNews, Rather's apology was hedged. He basically stated that he still thinks the documents are real, but he can't prove it. And he defended his sources.
Sounds like a non-apology to me.
There is no coincidence that the timing of this democratic debacle comes on the heels of the "shake-up" in the Kerry campaign.
The addition of the Clintonistas, Lockhart, Begala, Carville, etc... SURELY figure into the mix regarding this issue.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Kerry campaign is behind the forgeries, and collusion with CBS. These dots need to be connected and Kerry will be toast.

Absolutely. I caught it on a local "rerun" and it made me think of Slick Willie. Both he and Dan were very sorry... to be caught. I don't believe Slick has apologized to Monica to this good day, and Dan is following his lead with a generic "sorry" and no real apology to Killian's family or the president. I hope Dan sees "Killian died, Rather lied" signs the rest of his life.

There is only one reason Mary Mapes mentioned the story (or made up the story)that Burkitt asked for contact with Lockhart. Since they knew the upshot of this report would be to set people looking for the real source, they say this to make sure you don't look in the obvious direction....the DNC. Burkitt had many, many prior contacts with the DNc and he was am obvious useful idiot to be used as a conduit for these documents. The Mapes, Lockhart story is like a quarterback looking you off in the wrong direction.

i wouldn't be surprised if there was no unimpeachable source... it might just be a ruse to get people looking for someone who isn't there
or they might have dug into bobwoodward's bag of unimpeachable sources and picked the one who's in a coma or is dead at this moment
Really, though, this absolutely compounds the lie. It can never be that CBS were merely misled. CBS can never use the phrase "unimpeachable source" again because we will not be able to tell if they are just stiffening their coverup. Don't let CBS off the hook. They are compromised.
