Burr 3 points behind Bowles in latest poll
Winston-Salem Journal ^ | September 23, 2004 | JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRE REPORT

Posted on 09/23/2004 9:44:20 AM PDT by JohnnyZ

RALEIGH - A new poll shows the race for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina tightening, with Republican Richard Burr closing to within 3 percentage points of Democrat Erskine Bowles.

In other polls so far, Bowles - who ran for the Senate two years ago against Republican Elizabeth Dole - has led by 8 to 10 percentage points.

But the poll for N.C. FREE, a trade group in Raleigh that tracks state elections, found Bowles with support from 44 percent, Burr with 41 percent and 12 percent undecided, according to N.C. FREE members who have seen it.

The statewide poll of more than 700 likely voters was conducted by Verne Kennedy, a pollster in Florida, before the Republican National Convention began Aug. 30 and before Burr released ads last week that criticize Bowles' support of a tax increase as a member of the Clinton administration.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Hope Bowles invites Kerry in to stump for him.

Burr will win, Irksome Bowels will go back to Washington to work with the witch. I doubt Ballentine will win the Gov race, but Burr will win.

My uncle lives in Louisville, and I had an e-mail from him this morning with a link to a Louisville Courier-Journal article. I hadn't yet read the article when I saw you post that Northup was up in the latest poll, but I immediately knew that that's what my uncle had e-mailed me. This is a much better result than that poll a couple of weeks ago that saw the Democrat Miller up by like 5%.

Irksome got 45% against Dole, and has basically polled right around that so far this cycle. Burr is just now building his name recognition.

Unless Irksome can give people a reason to vote for him, his support this election will be the same as last time. The Undecideds are Burr's to take if he plays his cards right.

"Bowles responded by crying that Burr was using "negative" "attack" ads. Pretty lame, if you ask me. "

You can tell that Bowles had this ad in the can and was waiting for ANYTHING that could be even slightly perceived as being negative to run it.

I've never considered ad that illustrate a candidates record to be negative. Whether the record is negative or positive is in the eye of the beholder. Libs should love it because is shows Bowles likes tax increases and is Klinton's good buddy. Isn't that what libs are all about?

This would explain the new attack add against Burr, being ran by some looney, liberal, environmental group, accusing Burr of voting in favor of big oil and putting a 29 million dollar clean up burden on the tax-payers, that according to them huge oil should be paying for.

Typical, liberal Bowel movements. These Bowelseites, will have us believe that if humungus oil were forced to pay for the clean up, tax-payers would get a pass. As though gigantic oil would not add the price of the clean up onto the cost of gasoline, which is purchased by tax-payers.

Wonder if the Bowelseites have any plans for an alternative form of energy, just in case they are successful in their plans to bankrupt big, massive, gigantic, obese oil? Considering the teeny mentality of big environment, they probably do.

I can hear those tiny wheels within the dimunative brains of Bowelseites turning as we speak. I see their vision for energy independence: Mutated hamsters the size of elephants, running inside huge wheels. powering the engines of civilization and industry. Hamsters mutated on varing scales, powering automobiles, trucks, trains and busses.

The only problem they are wrestling with, is what to do with all that hamster sh*t. We can help them with that, can't we? Just kill all the cattle, and the liberals can bedazzle us with "HS", Hamster Sh*t, in place of the BS they have been using.

That's good news, but it's still an uphill battle for Richard Burr. Erskine's ads are just very, very good, and Erskine comes off as a likeable regular guy - a lie -- but image is everything.

My friend Karl Rove said North Carolina isn't in play in the presidential race.

But we have a Bush-Cheney04 office here anyway!

I keep hearing that, but the only poll I've seen (from August) only has Bush up by 5.

See http://www.dalythoughts.com/nc/nc.htm, a website run by FR's very own Dales.

Karl Rove, in today's Washington Times: "A lot of states that were expected to be in close contention are floating out of contention: North Carolina, Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri; maybe Colorado, Arizona," he said.

"I mean, some of them are gone; North Carolina is gone," he said of the home state of Mr. Kerry's running mate, Sen. John Edwards.

I don't know what the margin of error for this particular poll is, but for many, 3 points under or over is a dead heat! :)

Can we say momentum? Every time I see a new poll, Burr is closing the gap. Keep working, we will get there.

NO question about it--when Bush's lead is secured he will visit the states and help his Senate candidates in doubt. I pray SC turns R. Bowles is such a Clinton-lackey. And, by all rights, SC is a conversative REPUBLICAN state. How can they be fairly represented by such an elitest, arrogant twit as Bowles?

Burr is not leading??! Good grief

Bowles has higher name recognition from running last time and Burr decided to save his money to use it right now when people start paying attention. It will be interesting to see if Burr's strategery pays off. I bet it does.
