1000 Dead, 1000 Missing in Haiti After Tropical Storm Jeanne
Voice of America ^ | 23 Sep 2004 | VOA News

Emergency workers in Haiti are scouring through sewage and knee-high mud in search of survivors and victims of Tropical Storm Jeanne, which has left more than 1,000 people dead.

Haitian officials say at least 1,000 other people are missing, and the death toll could climb as high as 2,000.

Most of the victims were in the northwestern coastal city of Gonaives. Reports from the area say sewage and animal carcasses litter the streets, and the stench is unbearable.

Workers are burying the dead in mass graves. Health officials fear an outbreak of illnesses, including malaria and tetanus.

Jeanne has regained hurricane strength and is churning east of the Bahamas. Forecasters say it could hit the storm-battered U.S. state of Florida.

Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.

I just heard on 'Coast to Coast' that a whole island off of Haiti is missing. Does anyone know anything about this?

What is is with all of these "Johns"? John Kerry, John Edwards, Ivan (Russian form of John) and Jeanne (French fem. John). Florida appears to be a storm magnet, politically and meteorologically.

The rumor is that it is Tortuga Is. off the coast of Haiti.

Haven't heard anything in the English press, but here's a link to a story from a Spanish language news site. I have no idea how credible this source is.

Hard to believe that an island of this size could be washed away by a hurricane.

Thanks for all the info. If this island is "gone" from the storm, that is an extraordinary story!

There are very few liberals where I work, but yesterday we were talking about Ivan coming back for another run at Florida and possibly Texas this time when one of the liberals had the nerve to say (in a room full of conservatives) that these hurricanes were being directed to Florida and Texas to punish the "Bush boys". The stupidity of these people is staggering sometimes. I was at a loss for words and that rarely happens.

It is false to state that Ile de la Tortue was covered by Jeanne. Its highest elevation is 459 meters, and most of the island has an elevation above 100 meters ((about 110 yards)).

However, riverfront or beachfront dwellers were probably also impacted as badly as their counterparts on the Haitian mainland. But with communications not reported, no one knows yet.

Subject: E&E: Tortuga Island Disaster Now Confirmed

ECTV Exclusive - Tortuga Island Disaster Now Confirmed
September 24th 2004

Earth Changes TV Breaking News
by Mitch Battros - ECTV

I have now received no less than six news agency confirmations reporting the small island of Tortuga has "vanished". The entire island along with its 26,000 inhabitants have been washed away by "large waves".

This unthinkable event happened as a result of hurricane 'Jeanne', which has also killed over 2,000 people and displaced 250,000 in Haiti.

An expedition of United Nations officials were dispatched via two helicopters to evaluate the damage to the island of "Tortuga". A radio transmission was sent back to base on the island of Haiti. The message stated "we can't find the island".

It is reported the tandem UN helicopters circled for a long period, most likely in stark disbelief nothing was to be found. Not a trace of life or land. It is now reported all 26,000 may have perished.

I'm not sure I have ever heard of such a disaster. I know of tsunami's having killed hundreds, maybe even a few thousand, but I have never heard of a whole community being wiped out in minutes.

Total families are gone. A complete island missing. And a hurricane who has yet to see the end of its deadly way.

The Russian news agency "Gorodfm" filed the following report:

(As translated) "United Nations helicopters made flight over that area but have seen only storming sea. The area of Tortuga is 180 square kilometers; population is made 26 000 human beings.

Today helicopters of the United Nations will make repeated flight of region."

Perhaps something like:

"Well, DIMRAT, my take on it is that given that somehow the storms were destined for whatever reasons, God realized it was only the Bush boys were not girliemen--that only they had the balls to deal with the problems therefrom so He directed the storms be adjusted accordingly. Obviously SKERRY'S spitballs wouldn't help much."
