It's by Clinton's design (both Hillary and Bill). With the democrats in tatters, she will be able to take over as its head next election. They did this on purpose so they can look like moderates and Americans will trust them.

Norquist is an apologist for islam and jihad. He is a disgrace to conservatism. He should be shunned.

Thank you for this post. I disagree with this exceeedingly eloquent and carefully reasoned essay, only in that I believe the democrat party to be extremely dangerous for many years to come. I plan to benchmark Grover Norquist for future reading. He is excellent.

The modern Democratic Party is the party of government. Its growth is the health of the state--and vice versa. Over time, all the party's building blocks are dependent on continuous support and reinforcement by the power of the central government. Trial lawyer money is now a major part of the Democratic Party, but it is wholly dependent on legislators and courts maintaining the present tort laws that allow lawyers to interject themselves into any and all contracts and relationships.

Actually it is much worse than the above indicates, because it isn't focused on the right place.

The democratic party is only as strong as it political professionals that work for the party during an election.

I know inside the beltway people who use to work for either in the offices of democratic congressmen on or as committee staff of democratic party controlled congressional committess. These types of people went from either staff for a single elected official to staff of a committee to partronage assignments when the Dem's controlled the whitehouse. They are fighting between themselves for fewer and fewer jobs in the DC area.

To make maters worse the old standby alternative, lobbying, has now under solid Republican control of the legislative and executive branches closed a lot of doors to Democrat lobbiests.

This is forcing a lot of the professional political party hacks/workers to go back to the states they came from and try to either get "real jobs" or to force them into small time (i.e. small salary) local partisan politicial jobs back home. They as a group are not happy campers and discussed that the party they have devoted much of their life to can no longer provide them with a "decent" standard of living.

These folks have been hanging on hoping that a Democrat will get elected to the whitehouse so that they can get partronage jobs in the executive branch. Many have taken out second mortgages to work in the Kerry Campaign or have been hammered by party officials to donate a significant amount of their salary from congressional staff jobs to the Kerry election campaign. If the Dem's loose more seats in the House and Senate and the winers cut back on partisan committee staff and the Executive branch stays in the hands of Republicans, you will see a mass migration out of the Washington DC area in November.

I had a radical enviro nut case come to my door the other day. He started his spiel for donations by informing me that his organization was trying to undo all the damage Bush and Cheney have done to the environment.

Me: What damage? They haven't done any damage to the environment and you know it.

He: Obviously you don't want to see the truth.

Me: I'm asking you for the truth. What damage?

He: I don't need to waste my time with you.

Me: Hold on, YOU came to MY door. Now I ask you again, what damage?

He: I can't talk to someone who won't see the truth.

Me: Then give me the truth.

He: There's no point. You'll chose to believe lies.

Me: You came to my door making accusations about the president, I asked you for specifics and you can provide none.

He: Because you choose to ignore the truth.

About then it hit me, these people can no longer get away with lying about their causes. There is a great cleanser, deodorant let's call it, that will expose them as the frauds they are. I could have invited him into my house and within ten minutes of internet surfing gotten to the truth of the matter.

This is the MO of the Democrat party. But it doesn't wash anymore. Glad to see they're on their way out. Now let the real debate begin.

He forgot to mention the National Education Association.

Oh, there will still be something called the Democratic party in 2008, probably still in 2040, and possibly even in 2100. But until they shed themselves of that apostasy that seized control of their party during and after the Viet Nam War, the "anti-war" faction, which in fact is only against SOME wars, they will flounder around forever as a minority party. They have made themselves as irrelevant as Whigs, or Prohibitionists, and for the same reasons - they do not, or cannot, address the issues that concern the greater number of Americans.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT FUNDING HEALTH INSURANCE! They DO care about how much health care costs, and getting quality care. But no government program yet proposed by the Democrats tackles the problem of making access to health care both less costly and more widely available. In essense, every proposal comes down to rationing what health care is available, and limits future medical advancements to only what is cheap, not what is good.

I think he's underestimating the power of Democrat-appointed judges to rewrite the laws and the Constitution. Even if the Republicans achieved a filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate (which is not likely to happen this year), the Democrats will remain entrenched in the courts, just like the Federalists were after 1801.

From the post: "The modern Democratic Party cannot survive the reelection of President George W. Bush and another four years of Republican control of both Congress and the White House."

I'm glad you put "modern" in there - because it's clear the Democratic Party didn't survive the take over by the Socialist -

It appears to be a win one - lose one situation for the(Socialist) party - (at least one should hope)

I work in a West Palm Beach office and am the only Rep. with the exception of the owner of the company. I do have a couple of my co-workers who admit their party is in big trouble, but the rest are totaly blind to the fact.

I would agree if the Republican Party were the party of reducing government, reducing spending, and of term limits. We have made no progress these last four years except in National Security. Thank goodness we have improved that.
