Skip to comments.WSJ: The Florida Myth

...Senator Jon Corzine: "Voter suppression and intimidation . . . in Florida again!? The GOP used voter intimidation and outright fraud to hand Florida to George W. Bush in 2000, and if we don't stop them, they'll do it again."
Yes, the political urban legend that black voters in Florida were harassed and intimidated on Election Day four years ago is making a comeback. Only yesterday Jimmy Carter, fresh from blessing Hugo Chavez's dubious victory in Venezuela, moaned that in 2000 "several thousand ballots of African Americans were thrown out on technicalities" in Florida, and that this year more black than (Republican) Hispanic felons are being disqualified to vote -- as if all felons weren't supposed to be barred, regardless of race.
As the Corzine letter and the "Jim Crow" pamphlet nearby suggest, this is all election-year demagoguery. Democrats and their acolytes are raising this myth from the dead to scare up black turnout and lay the groundwork for challenges in court if John Kerry loses. So, before Dan Rather concludes this is another scoop, let's all remember the fraud that didn't happen in 2000.
In June 2001, following a six-month investigation that included subpoenas of Florida state officials from Governor Jeb Bush on down, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a report that found no evidence of voter intimidation, no evidence of voter harassment, and no evidence of intentional or systematic disenfranchisement of black voters.
Headed by a fiercely partisan Democrat, Mary Frances Berry, the Commission was very critical of Florida election officials (many of whom were Democrats). For example, "Potential voters confronted inexperienced poll workers, antiquated machinery, inaccessible polling locations, and other barriers to being able to exercise their right to vote." But the report found no basis for the contention that officials conspired to disenfranchise voters....

Carter's vicious racial politicking is despicable for anyone, and more so for an ex president. He is either senile or he knows perfectly well what he is saying is dangerous nonsense.
Still in use in Chicago, democrat central.
I don't think we could ever successfully argue that at any time Jimmy Carter knew what he was saying or doing. Anyone who suffered through that reign of terror known as the Carter presidency knows that.
"Ah HAH!! The absence of any evidence whatsoever is proof positive itself, that there were secret means of massive voter disenfranchisement!" (The wonders of a diseased 'Rat mind)
" . . . the political urban legend that black voters in Florida were harassed and intimidated on Election Day four years ago . . . "
That was proved to be totally untrue back then and we in Florida resent very much that it was ever even suggested in the first place. I eagerly anticipate a resounding victory for Bush in Florida AGAIN, despite crap like this.
In the Beginning was The Lie. And The Lie was with The Left. And The Lie was The Left.
And The Lie was brought unto the places wherein dwelled The Sheep. And The Sheep beheld The Lie, and saw that it was good; and The Sheep followed The Lie, and The Left, for they were as one.
And The Sheep shall always believe The Lie.
yep, denying all those FELONS the right to vote is fraud according to the RATS.
Using Ter-ay-za's word, Carter is a scumbag.
He has always been a very mean, vindictive, cold man. He continues to try dividing America for partisan reasons. He is a disgrace.
Democrat's favorite tactic....'fear mongering'...generate hysteria among those who don't bother to check facts...yet still get to vote...and determine govt. for the rest of us...
One man one vote crap is killin' the America of our founders...
People should have to pass a battery of IQ tests, have served honorably in the military, and own property before they are allowed to vote...
I know that a lot of delusional leftists want to believe all this nonsense, I just can't figure how, in light of the US Civil Rights Commission report on FloriDUH, they can. Also, I can't fathom how they have managed to ignore the audit conducted by the different newspapers that concluded that Bush won the state fairly.
The inhabitants have taken the Democrat playbook one chapter further.
They are not willing to wait for government to handout largesse.
They have gone out and stolen, raped and murdered their way into Democrat hierarchy!
What was wrong with 20% mortgage rates, 7% unemployment and 13% inflation? At least he invented the Department of Energy that didn't create any energy.
Facts, such as these, have no relevance as far as the enemy Dimocrat war machine is concerned.
Corazine is a leader in the corrupted state of N.J. and will work with other enemy leaders to bring Florida and it's minions, many of whom are mental defectives, over to the slubime idiocy that is socialistic Communism.
The Democrat Party is a cancerous growth that has spread throughout this land, rotting the minds and souls of good Americans everywhere.
The action needed, of course, is the application of a scalpel to that malignancy. The only question is should the patient be given anesthesia prior to the operation.
I like to think that the racial demagoguery convinces many more honorable voters to vote for the reps.
He's crooked, partisan and vicious. He affects the bathrobe of senility in the same way that mob boss Gigante did for years.
FWIW ... I totally agree!
Facts don't matter to dims. Like magic, there is no election fraud if a dim wins.
We have a secret plan to commit voter atrocities in Florida. The hurricanes damaged many polling places in democrat controlled areas and we will be late to announce the new polling places. The hurricanes and the late announcements are both the dastardly work of the Bush family and the RNC and only a small part of the overall secret plan!!!
Jimmah Carter and Kerry are smart enough to see through our secret plan and knew of the plan before we did. I wish we weren't so dumb and could get away with it! The DNC is hiring a lawyer to go to the polls with each democrat voter. The lawyer is to file a suit before the voter votes and another suit immediately after they vote.
I have bought cloaking devices to hide the polls. I have hacked into the database for the voting machines. Rather than give Florida to Bush, which would be to obvious, Nader will win Florida. This is why Kerry has a suit trying to keep Nader of the Florida Ballot.
Got to run now, the mother ship is waiting!
And a cursed they who lie with Sheep.
For those new to this world of politics, etc. here is a chance to look at people (ted kennedy, john corzine, jimmy carter, for instance) who tell bold-faced lies to the American people to further their and their party's political future. If these people can do this on a regular basis, which they do, it makes you wonder what is inside of them. I wouldn't want one of them dating my daughter, or babysitting my kids.
"Fiercely partisan" doesn't do Berry justice. In December 2001, I was watching live on C-SPAN when the Commission on Civil Rights met for the first time with the new Bush appointee, Peter Kirsanow, who replaced Victoria Wilson, a emergency Clinton appointee whose term had expired. Kirsanow's appointment would have balanced the committee with four Republicans to four Democrats, and Berry wasn't about to allow that.
Berry insisted that Kirsanow shouldn't have been appointed, figuring (erroneously, as the case later turned out) that the rules for the tenure of appointees like Wilson should have kept her around longer. She said she would not allow Kirsanow to seated at a commission meeting without a Federal Marshal.
When Kirsanow finally was sworn in, he found that his seat on the panel was occupied by Ms. Wilson, whose time was up legally. According to writer Gregory Hand of Enter Stage Right, this is what happened:
This was the most disgusting display of arrogance in government I have ever personally witnessed. I'm getting riled just thinking about it. If I remember correctly, in a live FR thread for people watching the spectacle live, I wrote something to the effect of 'I never in my life wanted to punch an old lady in the teeth before now.'
Last Thursday evening, in response to Berry's threats about refusing to recognize Bush's nominee, Gonzales had a District of Columbia judge swear Kirsanow in, attempting to bypass her. In response, the following day Berry still refused to seat Kirsanow at the Commission's December meeting, allowing Wilson to sit in his place. Kirsanow, who arrived with three attorneys and sat in the front row of the audience, attempted to vote, but he was ignored and eventually sat silently as the commissioners continued debate.
Also during the two-hour meeting the three Republican commissioners repeatedly referred to "Commissioner Kirsanow," while Berry and her Democratic-leaning allies referred to Kirsanow as "some member of the audience." "This issue will have to be decided by the courts," said Berry, who fended off repeated attempts by the three Republican members to formally introduce Kirsanow or to adjourn the meeting until the dispute is settled. Berry, in fact, called for a commission vote on every Republican effort to introduce Kirsanow - and the result every time was 5-3 against recognizing him. Your tax dollars at work.
Flip on C-span, It's all about FL this morning..
He's a democrat.
Democrat members of my family have decided they are not even going to vote - thanks in part to the hate rhetoric of people like Carter and Kennedy. The other part is they just don't "get" Kerry. They don't like Pres Bush but are more disgusted with the demo party.
Carter is the epitome of a communist, racial agitator, malcontent, and one dried up corn husk looking individual. Carter should be exiled to a Siberian Gulag with the rest of his crew. Bush/Cheney 2004
I watched three hours of that too. Except for a young black woman who was supposedly turned away from the polls 5 minutes before closing no one had any valid evidence, hearsay or not, that there was any conspiracy against African Americans.
I remember one wheel chair bound voter who refused to vote because the doorway measured 32" instead of 36" and wouldn't allow any accommodation. Not one voter managed to prove any denial of their right to vote.
This partisan commission found NO evidence of disenfranchisement and yet the left trots out the myth as fact at every turn. It's truly sickening.
How algore almost stole an election .....
Bug-eyed Chad Search
The only thing that will be similar to four years ago is being evidenced by the RATS already lying and setting themselves up to send in their lawyers.
>>Carter's vicious racial politicking is despicable for anyone, and more so for an ex president. He is either senile or he knows perfectly well what he is saying is dangerous nonsense.
I used to think Carter meant well, but was just misguided. In the last few years, I have adjusted my judgement of the man.
He knows perfectly well what he is saying is dangerous nonsense.
They just keep hoping that enough sheep don't know about the Civil Rights Commission findings (or lack thereof) and the MSM investigation of the recounts.
Why shouldn't they believe it - they still control the American indoctrination/education system.
The Demonrats tried as hard as they could to steal the election in Florida at 2000, and were barely prevented from doing so. Now they're trying again, and this time they're starting early.
Heads up. Be ready, there is no crime they will not commit in their drive for power.
I was a veteran of the 36 day election fiasco in FL.
I saw Jesse Jackson on local TV say (paraphrase) "We already have over 8,000 African Americans who have signed affadavits that they were not allowed to vote".
That was a lie then and they are lying again.
Democrats are evil.
And the Department of Education that didn't create any education.
Man, oh man, what a joke of a failed presidency.
Right - the kindly old southern baptist gentleman routine wore pretty thin after it became clear Carter was nursing bitterness towards Reagan for years after 1980.
But he's really let the veil fall lately. What a miserable old fart - when will he sit down & shaddup?
You forgot Haliburton. Haliburton secretly created a device to spawn hurricanes and control their direction and magnitude. They gave this device to Dick Cheney in return for being sent to Iraq to lose money and risk death.
Or running any part of my government.
When the media wing of the Democratic party stops putting microphones in his face and asking him to speak.
Shhhhh some of this is still classified.
Not necessarily--depends on what his goal was. Jimmuh Carter caused immense harm to our country and to our citizens. IMO he was very successful in the pursuit of his goal.
