John Kerry’s lead among younger voters has vanished as they become increasingly inclined to see the country as headed in the right direction, according to the first GENEXT poll conducted since the Republican National Convention in late August.
If the election were held today, the two main candidates would be neck-and-neck among under-30 voters, with 45 percent of them voting for Kerry and 44 percent for President George W. Bush. Independent candidate Ralph Nader draws 6 percent of the youth vote. Last month Kerry had the support of 50 percent of young voters, Bush had 41 percent. (In the most recent NEWSWEEK poll of all registered voters, taken between Sept. 9 and 10, Bush led Kerry with 49 percent of the vote versus the challenger's 43 percent.)
The increased support for Bush is also reflected in the narrowing spread between younger voters who believe the country is headed along the right track or in the wrong direction. Last month, 54 percent of those polled felt the country was headed in the wrong direction, compared to 42 percent who saw it as being on the right track. In the new poll, nearly as many people felt it was on the right track (47 percent) as felt it was heading in the wrong direction (51 percent).

Birthday is on Nov 5th so I was able to vote for Bush absentee in 2000 (was living out the country and missed the recount and election night antics). Nov 2nd I'll be voting for Bush again as a 21 year old.
I'll be 18 in 2 weeks and in 6 weeks I'll proudly cast my ballot for George W. Bush.
Currently 26, almost 27, voting for Bush just as I did 4 years ago.
The numbers are looking good. Youth voters are typically overwhelmingly in favor of Dems. They are losing their base voters, they cannot win elections with the numbers tied this way. Ditto for the female vote. G.W. can win without the majority of women, but the Dems cannot.
I suspect that if you broke the numbers down even further you'd find that the younger set (18-25) are predominately Kerry supporters while the older half are Bush supporters. Why? Because the older half is out of college and paying taxes.
This is actually a disaster for Kerry. Young voters tend to be quite liberal early on, focusing on ideals, not reality. W. is in fine shape.

Welcome aboard the vast right wing conspiracy. I am certain that a lot of the humor and insight in the Free Republic comes from the younger voters. I am pleased to note that we are the parents of a 22 year old son and 20 year old daughter who will be contributing to Bush's tally in the People's Republic of California. I just hope that enough Californians realize that Kerry is another Gray Davis, but with less personality and vision.
BTW: My parents in Boca are sick of bringing in their patio furniture and are so well stocked on supplies for a nuclear war. Consider yourself luck you moved to Nevada.
What I think is revealing is that according to the internal poll data, a lot of college students vote democrat, then move on and get good jobs and later vote republican..(just a generalization, I know) ....but if that college student stays in an academic setting they get pretty radically democrat. I don't want to plagarize another Freeper, but he summed it up as "simple...professors never really had to make it in a real business environment, so they are democrats"

Your vote will be something you will always remember and be proud of. I was fortunate to have turned nineteen in 1980 and cast my first ballot for Ronald Reagan. It felt great, and to this day I am happy to say that I'm one of the millions who elected a great man to office.
Not only is this a disaster for Kerry, but the article itself is indicative that the MSM cannot find anything else positive to write up about Kerry's electoral chances.
It's early, of course, but even the MSM is smelling defeat for the RATS.
My oldest son, on the other hand, has built up a resolve to the liberal indoctrination at the middle school level. (13 yrs) May he be the exception to the rule!

bush has the big momentum. The debates will clinch it as Kerry will be negative and Bush an optimist.
21 year old for Bush in NE Ohio. Live in a house with 33 like-aged guys. All but 8 are voting for Bush. My campus is evenly split as a whole I would say. Imagine what the ratio would be without the campus sponsored Andre Heinz speech, teachers bringing in MoveOn.org speakers, professors anti-bush words and decorations, and the college theatre (which plays one movie a weekend) having two showings of Farenheit 9/11.
I'm glad to hear that. I hope that you don't wait six weeks. The election is in five.
