Robin Williams and Stevie Wonder raise funds for Obama
The Illinois Leader ^ | Sept. 29 2004 | The Leader-Chicago Bureau

CHICAGO -- Friday night, Grammy award winner Stevie Wonder and comedian Robin Williams, two outspoken critics of President Bush, will be in Chicago to raise $500 per person for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama.

Pop and soul singer Stevie Wonder, who campaigned on behalf of Al Gore in 2000, will be joined by Robin Williams, who has been an outspoken critic of President Bush.

Earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival before a group of international journalists and film critics, Williams criticized Bush's decision to rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein and questioned the search for WMDs.

"Bush is complaining about a lack of intelligence, which seems sort of redundant," Williams, a native of Chicago, said. "They say they don't know if Iraq had any WMDs - well, all they have to do is ask [Vice President Dick] Cheney for the receipts."

Williams, 53, has criticized Bush for the past four years. In 2000, when Bush was running as a "compassionate conservative," Williams joked that Bush sounds like someone who drives "a Volvo with a gun rack."

In one performance, Williams and good friend comedianne Whoopi Goldberg used unfiltered vulgar language when talking about the President, causing a national uproar.

"We have a president for whom English is a second language," Williams said. "He's like 'We have to get rid of dictators,' but he's pretty much one himself."

Obama has been equally strong in his criticism of the President's decision to enter Iraq in the war on terrorism, but has parted with other Democrats earlier this week when he said he would consider bombing Iran to rid the country of possible nucleur weapons.

The state senator who won in a tough primary and was flung into national ranks at the Democratic National Convention in August has raised almost $13 million dollars for his U.S. Senate campaign as of the last report to the Federal Election Commission. He is leading in statewide polls over his Republican opponent Alan Keyes by a margin as wide as fifty percentage points.

The next campaign finance reports will be submitted on September 30.

Obama has not publicly distanced himself from comments made by Williams concerning the president.

At a concert earlier this year, Williams said, "We're here tonight because of the Shrub, you know who I'm talking about. George W. Bush, Jr.," Williams stated. "The W stands for 'where the Hell is it?' You know, you look at George W. and you realize some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some get it as a graduation gift. So sad. I just want to ask the Secret Service, is it true that his Secret Service code name is Gilligan?"

How about: "Robin Williams and Stevie Wonder raise money to ensure that babies that survive abortions get thrown in the trash alive"?

Chicagolady, Thanks for the heads up. I did see your post. I'll send a freepmail out to all members, unfortunately since this wasn't announced until the 28th there's not time to get a lot of freepers out. It's also a fundraiser, which means we probably won't get near the guy.

I'm looking for something in October that we can plan well in advance at get at least twelve freepers there to crash the event and confront Osamabama directly with some tough questions.

In the meantime though, anyone who wants to go after Obama on Friday, I say go for it!

Heads up Chicagoland freepers.

What? Keyes is being outspend 260-to-1? What the hell?

Are the Republicans even trying to win, or are they intentionally trying to lose?

Huh...and all this time, the Leftists have been saying that Republicans are the ones with deep pockets.

I think the person who deserved to be freeped the most in this case is Robin Williams. I've known for a while he was a liberal Dem, but ususally the guys limits the political stuff to stage humor. We don't need another Hollyweird entertainer shoving his image onto a campaign.

"you realize some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some get it as a graduation gift."

And some from doing cocaine. Right, Mr. Williams?

Is that what brought you to a higher plane of enlightenment?

It helped you to realize how raising money for a pro-infanticide candidate is a great cause, right?
