uhhh playing for the current president is a way to recognize the nation. If they played for kerry, who is not president, then it would be partisan.

There's also a poll at your link. 65% to 35% for the kids should have played.
Who the heck is the school super? The article didn't say.

The band from Parkland High School said it wants to remain neutral in the presidential race. The school superintendent announced the decision Thursday. She said it's a public school district and doesn't want to be divisive.
IDIOT!!!!!!! I NEVER want to hear another liberal say "It's for the children" again!! Playing for the President of the United States of America would be one of the most thrilling moments in these kids' lives and this dimwit shot it down.

This is a good one. Did the students get to vote on this? I doubt it. In fact, I would wager that the superintendent and/or band director are the ones who made that decision.
If you go to a "public" school, I would think that it would be proper to play for any "elected" official. Are they saying that even if the president had visited three years ago they would not play for him? Only now because this is an election year?
I was in the choir in a Chicago Public School. We sang several times for Mayor Daly during election years. I don't recall anyone ever questioning the decision.

I doubt that the KIDS in the band had any say in this at all.

She said it's a public school district and doesn't want to be divisive. Two other school districts said their marching bands will play for Bush at the rally.
When a High school band declines an opportunity to perform for the President of the United States, that is NOT remaining neutral. That is making a definite statement of opposition. Regardless of who holds the office, it is an honor to be invited to perform for that office. The school superintendent can claim all she wants that she "doesn't want to be divisive", but she has very loudly made a very divisive statement with her decision. She is an idiot of the first order.

FOLKS, THERE'S A REAL STORY HERE...
HOW HARD WOULD IT BE TO FIND SOMEONE IN PA TO INTERVIEW THE KIDS TO GET **THEIR** TAKE ON IT?
I AM ALMOST CERTAIN THE STUDENTS WOULD HAVE **LOVED** THE HONOR AND THAT IT WAS THE PRINCIPAL AND SUPERINTENDENT THAT ARE IMPOSING THEIR WILL AND THEIR ANTI-BUSH HATRED ON THE STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL AND THEIR PARENTS!!

Hate to sound sexist here and all that ... but I think I see the root of the problem on this one.

My brother-in-law is the director of
this awesome band that played before our President and a crowd of 55,000 in West Chester, Ohio (just north of Concinnati) this past Monday. My sister told me the night before they were planning for 30,000 and they didn't know how there were going to handle such a large crowd - ended up almost twice the size. By the way, this rally was held in a large field near the Voice of America's monstrous antenna. How appropriate.
