DEBATE MYSTERY: DID KERRY HAVE CHEAT SHEET?
Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:
"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."
So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?

Right now, everyone is talking about how bad Bush was. But if Kerry actually cheated, the topic of conversation about the debates would change quickly and everyone could forget about Bush's performance.
I just read the Drudge article. When a Dem starts saying it is "a Republican trick to distract" then you know there is something going on.
But it is a reason for sKerry to perform better than one would expect, which would obviously foreshadow Bush's performance. A debate is a comparison, and generally, ad-lib answers tend to pale compared to a read, rehearsed speech.

Yes. But it doesn't change the fact that President Bush (aside from his speech) didn't seem very well prepared in the second half of this debate. Substance is what matters in the long-run, and Bush clearly had more if you look through the transcripts. But his lack of coaching and "style" reduced the value of his substance. Bush gave Kerry more than was necessary, despite any cheating Kerry might have done. Now the fact Kerry might have cheated is and issue, but not in the context of debate performance. Let Kerry cheat in a debate: If Bush was better prepared, it wouldn't have mattered all that much.
So take it out of an argument about debate performance; combine it with Newsweek's loaded poll (too many republicans last time, too many democrats this time, for obvious reasons) and we have a story about how democrats cheat.
We all agree that Bush didn't do well. But that's not the point. If Kerry cheated, there's a significant problem here, and one that the American people should know about.
At first I thought it was a crack pipe or possibly a pocket knife in case they got into hand to hand combat, but after looking at it a few times I think it might just be a watch. Doesn't look like papers to me.
Good point. But it makes us look small and it blurs the focus of the important issues. Still it is fun to tweak the "Man 'O the People".

The night of the debate, there was a FR post detailing Kerry seemingly knowing the questions prior to them being given. Each laid out with responses from Lehrer/Kerry included.

Or would Americans feel this is the GW camp trying to push this and playing the sore-loser part. And with that just allow the media keep the poor performace of GW in the spot light.
Agreed. There is enough ammo in the transcript to bury Kerry. Even if he did have "notes", it certainly didn't help him.

another thing, IF he did cheat, Leher is looking RIGHT at him, as he pulls whatever it is out of his jacket pocket.. so he isnt ignorant of the fact, if Kerry did bring something with him, besides his arrogant pompus attitude

I must say though, it seems to be just one sheet of paper, so I'm not sure what all could have been on it that would be so very important.
Another point, kerry did well only because bush did rather poorly. If Bush had been on his game he would have wiped the floor with JFK.
Not sure that he even lost the debate, given that even with notes, Kerry couldn't come up with any substansive plans other than to consult the UN for guidance.
