The Right Stuff
In Hollywood, a Film Festival That's Rated GOP

By William Booth
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 4, 2004; Page C01

-- snip --

Billed as the first conservative film festival in Hollywood, the three-day affair showcased comic shorts, one about the "ultimate minority" in Tinseltown ("Greg Wolfe: Republican Jew"), an epic homage to Ronald Reagan and his battle against Soviet communism ("In the Face of Evil") and a snappy doc on tart-tongued commentator Ann Coulter ("Is It True What They Say About Ann?"), in which Coulter signs the T-shirt of a leftie college student with the words "Have fun in Guantanamo!"

-- snip --

Ron Smith, an activist with the conservative Web site Freerepublic.com, sat for the whole festival in the front row. "I'll give this to Michael Moore," he says. "He created a chain reaction. We have to thank him for that." He agreed that the anti-Moore, pro-Bush films were slow out of the gates, "but I'll tell you, this is just the beginning. We've got the Internet and talk radio and now we've got films. This is just a dry run. It'll be better next time around."

WAY TO GO, Jason & Govindini!!!
This EXTRAORDINARILY SUCCESSFUL first annual Liberty Film Festival was created by...
...the AMAZIBG husband/wife team of Jason Apuzzo and Govindini Murty:

Jason was mentored in this project by Irvin Kershner (dir., Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back ). Jason graduated from the USC School of Cinema-TV in 2001 with an MFA in Production. Jason's USC thesis short, “San Pedro,” is the most watched student short on the internet over the last three years. Jason's mentor at USC was ©Academy Award winning sound engineer Tom Holman, inventor of the THX sound system. Prior to USC, Jason received his Ph.D. in Germanic Literature from Stanford University , and a BA in Philosophy from Yale University . While at Yale, Jason founded The Yale Free Press , one of the nation's first conservative college newspapers, and was elected Speaker of the Yale Political Union.

That quote was fairly accurate; the incoherence was MINE, not the WaPo reporter's. :o)
What I **wanted** to communicate was the analysis by Andrew Breitbart (from "Michael Moore Hates America") about how the release of Fahrenheit 9/11 energized so many conservative film-makers.
I will post more LATER - after some much-needed sleep. :o)

Conservative Liberty Film Festival comes to mostly liberal West Hollywood

The Associated Press
October 03, 2004
Liberal West Hollywood is a city of firsts: First in the nation to provide health insurance to gay and lesbian partners of city employees. First to publicly support a woman's right to an abortion.

The city was even the first to criminalize the declawing of cats.

But West Hollywood can now add another first to those liberal accomplishments: site of the state's first conservative film festival, according to organizers of the Liberty Film Festival.

"There is a hunger for and a marketplace for people with conservative opinions," said Jason Apuzzo, a director who helped organize the three-day event.

Apuzzo's film "Terminal Island" was shown Saturday. In one scene, a young man pleads for his life as he is about to be strangled by a hooded terrorist.

"I'm a liberal, I'm your friend, I'm here to help you," the victim tells his attacker. "You'll never make it in this town without me."

One film profiled conservative pundit Ann Coulter. Another showed pro-peace advocates using less than peaceful language during a demonstration.

And there were several documentaries about Iraq, including one that took Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" to task.

In fact, the liberal Moore received a good bit of attention at the conservative film festival, the mere mentioning of his name provoking rounds of boos.

Cheers erupted at the mention of President Bush's name.

Liberal bashing aside, several people at the festival said they just wanted the chance to see films that they believe address the values of real Americans and the lives they lead.

"I'm personally exhausted by all the remakes, the sequels and the comic book movies while the war on terror - the pre-eminent event of our times - is undiscussed," said Apuzzo. "I think it's not healthy."

And, here is a SHORT EXCERPT from the Los Angeles:
LOS ANGELES
Films Seek to Counterbalance Liberal Fare
Several hundred people attend screenings and discussions as part of the Liberty Film Festival, billed as the first to cater to conservatives.
By Steve Hymon, Times Staff Writer

In a scene from a movie called "Terminal Island," a young man is being strangled by a hooded terrorist.

The man pleads for his life, saying, "I'm a liberal, I'm your friend, I'm here to help you. You'll never make it in this town without me."
The film, a thriller, was shown Saturday in West Hollywood as part of the three-day Liberty Film Festival, billed as the first to cater to conservatives...

-- snip --

...The festival included a short featuring antiwar protesters using less than peaceful language, a behind-the-scenes film on conservative pundit Ann Coulter and several documentaries about Iraq, with one aimed at debunking Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11."

The mention of Moore's name usually prompted a round of good-natured boos from the crowd of several hundred. Any mention of President Bush generated cheers, even when it came during a movie.

But often the festival was just as much a symposium on how to get a film produced. And even those who reviled Moore said the financial success of his documentary showed there is a huge appetite among filmgoers for political fare.

Another issue was values; many audience members said they believed that Hollywood movies no longer reflected real people and the lives they lead.

Instead, some attendees complained, the entertainment industry serves up heaps of gratuitous sex and violence.

Among today's screenings at the Pacific Design Center is a film titled "Brainwashing 101," described in the program as a "frightening, funny, behind-the-scenes account of how today's colleges have become left-wing indoctrination centers."

Wow, classy and beautiful.
You got THAT right!
IMHO, Govindini Murty will soon be joining Ann Coulter as one of Free Republic's FAVORITE articulate, intelligent (and, of course, GORGEOUS) conservative women:

TERMINAL ISLAND

Not a documentary, but a feature film.

Jason Apuzzo shows stylish flair as a director that bellies the limitations of his shockingly modest budget. The camera work, editing, and inventive touches suggest considerable savvy and unexpected wit on the part of an able and ambitious filmmaker.

Govindini Murty displays undeniable star power. From every angle, in every mood, the camera loves her and she glows on the screen … She possesses the sort of exotic and potent appeal combined with unmistakable intelligence that should guarantee spectacular success. -Michael Medved

But, sorry guys: like Michelle Malkin, Govindini is happily MARRIED. :o)

LIBERTY FILM FESTIVAL PANEL DISCUSSION -
Morgan Brittany taught lesson about abortion

dfu on the scene | 10-4-04 | doug from upland
Posted on 10/04/2004 7:19:52 AM PDT by doug from upland

Among the anecdotes from the three-day LIBERTY FILM FESTIVAL you are not likely to hear in the mainstream media involved the beautiful actress Morgan Brittany. The good news for her fans is that Brittany is beautiful on the inside, too.

During a panel discussion entitled "You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again," Brittany told the story of a young woman of about 20 who was working on the set on one of Brittany's projects. They talked about pro-life and pro-choice. Brittany asked about her position, and the young woman said she was pro-choice and it's her body. She was for abortion, even partial birth abortion.

Brittany, who is always ready to teach her values, asked the girl if she really knew what abortion was. She said yes. Then Brittany asked her if she knew what partial birth abortion was. Again, she answered yes. But when Brittany asked her to tell her what it was, she couldn't.

Then came the lesson. The girl was in disbelief when Brittany explained what was done to a baby as it was being delivered. The girl was shocked, saying "No way...that would be like...murder." Duh.

This is but one example of young people in our society in general and in Hollywood in particular who are leftists and abortion supporters because of the herd mentality. Brittany explained it as group think and people in Hollywood wanting to believe in what was cool at the time. They know some key words and just believe in the agenda without giving it much thought.

When confronted with the gruesome facts, the basic humanity of the girl came into play. She was right. That would be like...murder.

Keep teaching the lessons, Morgan.
