The Right Stuff
In Hollywood, a Film Festival That's Rated GOP

By William Booth

Billed as the first conservative film festival in Hollywood, the three-day affair showcased comic shorts, one about the "ultimate minority" in Tinseltown ("Greg Wolfe: Republican Jew"), an epic homage to Ronald Reagan and his battle against Soviet communism ("In the Face of Evil") and a snappy doc on tart-tongued commentator Ann Coulter ("Is It True What They Say About Ann?"), in which Coulter signs the T-shirt of a leftie college student with the words "Have fun in Guantanamo!"

Ron Smith, an activist with the conservative Web site Freerepublic.com, sat for the whole festival in the front row. "I'll give this to Michael Moore," he says. "He created a chain reaction. We have to thank him for that." He agreed that the anti-Moore, pro-Bush films were slow out of the gates, "but I'll tell you, this is just the beginning. We've got the Internet and talk radio and now we've got films. This is just a dry run. It'll be better next time around."

Conservative Filmmaking 101: Seminar

The Conservative Filmmaking 101 seminar featured filmmakers Govindini Murty and Jason Apuzzo, organizers of the Festival, James Glennon ASC and Victor Elizalde of Sony Pictures.

Govindini, who I will abbreviate as G from now on, is the charming star of Terminal Island, a conservatively-themed film noir that takes on the war on terror as a theme. Judging by the trailer, it has some very stylish shots and a nice dash of humour, but my interest in it was pretty low due to the level of violence that existed. That's just personal taste and I'm sure a lot of us would enjoy the film. It's impossible for us to argue against the idea of a war on terror themed film, since it's the major political issue of our lives, and yet the majors have ignored it completely. This was mentioned by G with her forceful Italanite flair, and that leads us very nicely into ...

Victor Elzilde of Sony pictures. He was there to tell us the nuts and bolts inner workings of a studio, and he succeeded to a point. I'm satisfied that he was sincere in his convictions and beliefs, but he left out important components of the story.

He started with the theme that the producers of films are responsible to their shareholders for the performance of their productions. As a result, there is a huge bias against risk, and so Finding Nemo 2 is almost guaranteed to be made, while films that might be much better will be left unapproved.

He then mentioned that the film industry has rules. If you conform to their required structure, you will be more likely to have a film approved than if you don't. He emphasized that if you're a Stanley Kubrick, you can ignore this rule and make what you want, since someone of your talent WILL be discovered. But for most people, it would be easier if, for example, your movie was two hours or less -- easy to show in theaters, easy to fit on a DVD, and even easy to get on television with its rigid schedules. For some reason he never got around to mentioning any other rules (at least not that I remember). I would have liked to have heard some more guidelines, since I know that even if I was as brilliant as Kubrick, I'd still want to make it as easy as possible for someone to green-light my film.

He told us that there are two types of executives: Creative executives, who come up with ideas to produce, and finance executives, who focus solely on nuts and bolts. He was a finance executive, so of course he focused on the nuts and bolts end. He fervently insisted that there was no bias.

G said that he was flat-out wrong, that there was a ton of evidence just in the way she was able to shop around her film.

I think both people are right. We're talking to the wrong people here; itt sounded to me like he was talking about him and his fellow finance executives; the creative executives are the people who are coming up with ideas, and it seems to me that it's there where conservative themes get killed. So when G has meetings with creative executives, well, you know what happens.

Concerning the nuts and bolts of filmmaking, G had some excellent ideas that are well worth sharing...

How was the turnout for the festival, Ron? Most of the films were shown during our holiday of Sukkos and Shabbos so I couldn't come.

This "first annual" CONSERVATIVE film festival in Hollowood was a HUGE success, particularly considering how FAST it all came together.
Tickets just went on sale TWO WEEKS AGO, and many of the films were in their final edit stages up until the LAST MINUTE.
Several of the events were completely SOLD OUT, but ALL of the films were POWERFUL, and the response was INTENSE.

The turnout for Michael Moore Hates America was great. All but two or three seats were taken and what I found interesting was the cross-section of Americans that were there. Perhaps because it was in West Hollywood but it was truly a melting pot when you looked around the room.

Hello, RonDog:

I thought you might be interested in another conservative person, Agustin Blazquez, for other festivals you may have in mind. He was in the American Film Renassaince festival in Dallas, September 10. He is the director/producer of the documentary, Covering Cuba: Elian. I've written to RMDupree and Luis Gonzalez with regards to this information. This is Mr. Blazquez' email: abip.usa@verizon.net Silvina Castillo

Greetings from Radioactiveman. It was nice to meet you at last at the final event of the Liberty Film Festival which was a special presentation of the Ten Commandments with an introduction by Michael Medved. As usual Michael Medved made brilliant observations and commentary on the making of the Ten Commandments and the career of Cecil DeMillie. This was followed by a presentation of the movie itself which was a delight despite some technical problems.

Hopefully, this will become a BIG must-see event for the industry and I look forward to see you and the "freepdom" at the next festival

MOVIE REVIEW: IN THE FACE OF EVIL

Doug from Upland, FreeRepublic.com
Oct. 4, 2004

The Liberty Film Festival was a remarkable event held in West Hollywood, the backyard of the liberal elite. Experienced and new producers provided entertainment for an activist and very eager conservative audience. It is the audience that Hollywood has not only disregarded, but also insulted.

One of the standout movies of the weekend was IN THE FACE OF EVIL. For those on the left who have denigrated and mocked Ronald Reagan, this epic documentary is the answer that sets the record straight. Steve Bannon’s work is destined to be remembered as the definitive work on the man whose 45-year mission was to destroy the greatest evil of the 20th Century...

Unfortunately, the only event I attended was Michael Moore Hates America. I loved that film, it was very well done (and funny too); I specially like the fact that this movie was not really about michael moore, but about how great America really is. I will definitely buy this REAL documentary when it becomes available on DVD.

Besides the film itself, I really enjoyed the friendly emvironment of a room filled with like-minded people.

MOVIE REVIEW - WMD: THE MURDEROUS REIGN OF SADDAM HUSSEIN

MOVIE REVIEW

WMD: THE MURDEROUS REIGN OF SADDAM HUSSEIN

Brad Maaske/Jano Rosebiani

Perhaps the most powerful and emotional film at the recent Liberty Film Festival in West Hollywood, California was WMD: THE MURDEROUS REIGN OF SADDAM HUSSEIN.

Filmmakers Brad Maaske and Kurdish/American Jano Rosebiani have provided the world with long overdue heart-wrenching visual evidence that millions of human beings were living a literal hell on earth. How ironic. Hell in the Cradle of Civilization.

Men, women, and children were beaten, tortured, gassed, imprisoned, and murdered in unspeakable ways. Tens of thousands simply disappeared and were never seen by their families again. Those who survived live with incomprehensible physical and/or mental anguish.

The death of innocents may total as high 1.3 million. While the United Nations supervised the notorious “Oil for Food” program, criminals and thugs made millions of dollars. As many as 3 million children died because of lack of food, medicine, and medical care. The world did not do that. The United States did not do that. Saddam Hussein did that. He kept perhaps $10 billion dollars for himself while letting the children die.

Rosebiani provided footage from Iraq possessed by no other filmmaker in the world. The voiceovers were not even necessary. We could look into people’s eyes and souls and feel what they were saying.

Let the sanctions work? Let the sanctions work? Are you kidding? No one who watches this film will again tolerate those who tell them that the sanctions were working. Sorry, that it ludicrous and insulting.

God bless America and its allies. They are not the coerced or bribed as a particular disingenuous presidential candidate calls them. God bless those dedicated brave men and women who continue to confront evil in Iraq. Bribed and coerced? Not on your life. They are heroes.

There are no finer heroes in the world than the Americans who volunteered, left comfort at home, and risk their lives everyday so that others may enjoy the freedom that too many of us take for granted. They are in both military gear and civilian clothing.

After 12 years and 17 resolutions, Hussein was still playing games with the world. Victor Davis Hanson provided remarkable insight about the United Nations and why it is incapable of solving any of the world’s problems. Their goal appears to be little more than trying to attack, embarrass, and humiliate the United States. China is on the Security Council. Syria and Libya are on particular human rights committees. There is something very wrong with that picture.

Operation Iraqi Freedom indeed shocked and awed the world. In less than three weeks, Baghdad was taken. It was the greatest modern military marvel.

WMD contains a great deal of powerful footage from September 11, 2001. Only a short three years later, far too many Americans seem to have forgotten. They seem not to realize that we are in a world war that will likely continue for a very long time. It is almost painful to watch some of the man on the street interviews in which those who loathe our president are staggeringly ignorant of history and world affairs. For those who refer to our president as a Nazi, I ask you, what word is left for Hitler? What word do you use for the real Nazis?

If anyone did not shed a tear at the end of the film when the story of a soldier named Daniel Unger was told, they are without feelings. Unger was from Maaske’s hometown of Exeter, California. His heroic actions saved Iraqi lives but cost him his own. Unger’s parents are devastated but spoke on camera and exhibited a rare courage and pride for what their son had done. Knowing their son, they would have been shocked if he had been anything other than a hero.

WMD: THE MURDEROUS REIGN OF SADDAM HUSSEIN must be seen by those who question why we went to war in Iraq. It might not change the minds of the most rabid Bush haters who are filled with hate because of their political agenda, but it will change the hearts and minds of those who have hearts and minds.
