Look. Let's be quick and harsh for a change. Bush phoned-in his appearance at the first debate. He acted uninterested, bored, and even a little cranky. Bush's failure to skewer Kerry on his having voted for every tax increase and against every weapons system since 1984 is inexplicable and maddening. This is exactly what TV shows people during such a debate.

People talk about Kerry being a "great closer," but if you watch Bush's record, he hits his stride exactly when things begin the tank, as they are now in the polls. He know if he doesn't do much better in the next two debates he is likely to lose what seemed a sure thing.

I am certain that he has been getting tutored every waking minute since the first debate and will be far more aggressive on Friday.

When we start search for possibilities that fit a predefined template, then we've lost our momentum. If we can't prove that Kerry pulled out cheat cards for the debate, then we should drop it. There are plenty of issues with which we can trounce Kerry without resorting to convoluted theories of how he "could have" done it.

I agree that Bush is no debater. We knew that. I posted this because Kerry broke the rules and their response was "so we brought in a pen". The rules were there for a reason and some pens are not just pens.

The simplest answer is correct. It was a piece of PAPER.

I concur - there's no way it was a pen & it was obviously paper / cards of some type.

I would concur with that, especially since, as it stands, Kerry can be called a cheater, regardless, because he broke the rules, regardless, and it's left the way it is.

I agree. It's a little embarrassing.

Bush looked unsure, tentative and defensive. He seemed incapable of articulating his positions on foreign policy clearly.

I don't know why - I've seen him do this exceptionally in other forums.

I don't care particularly care if Kerry or Kerry's talking pen beat him. He got beat.

I'm hoping he comes out firing in the next debate.

CNN debunked the paper theory by saying fox news had video evidence that it was a black pen. The Democrats have said it was a black pen.

"might look black on video"

Kerry's object wasn't black.

Bush's pen was.

Riiiiggghhhtttt....CNN didn't have there own video techs look at the widely available tape?

Sounds like a nifty little conspiracy of silence. Maybe the 'net can damage CNN and Fox together on this one, like it did to CBS.

Hey dude. Yeah, it's actually QUITE embarassing. As if saying "he cheated, he had a cheat sheet!" is going to resonate.

The weird thing is that the ratings on Iraq, terror, etc haven't changed. Polls still show GWB is viewed as a better leader. But he is NOT a great communicater. He's better on the stump, in front of a friendly audience, who already have the details in their heads. But to a non-friendly audience, you have to be able to articulate your positions, and GWB is AWFUL at doing that.

He has to get beyond "resolve and hard work." It was painful hearing him say over and over..."a free Iraq is good for America." Why??? Explain WHY!!! But he never did. That hurt him too.

The good news is that America knows who the better commander in chief is. I think they will vote the right way. But it's not with relish. In my opinion, GWB is a so-so commander in chief. I think he HAS made mistakes, and he IS NOT a good communicater, which makes it harder to keep folks together on this. But he is clearly better than the other guy. So I think GWB will win by 5-10 points, but so far he needs to do a better job, as a president and a candidate. My two cents.

How do you know we can't? Because Fox is duplicitous?

Why not cover them all? Not only do we got Kerry's paper story, now we got a story that the MSM might be covering it up! Perfect for the net, blogs and talk radio.

"See my website" is not a valid answer in a debate.

No kidding!

Are we going to be talking about this four years from now like some other people we know?

I say keep hitting Kerry over the head with this. Sure some of these theories are wild but the funnier it seems, the more it makes it a target for late night talk show hosts to make jokes about it as the next debate looms.

How long did we have to endure the left spinning wild tales of how the forged Bush National Guard memos could be "real"? For a week with all of the journalists following the CBS/USA Today/AP lead.

Kerry won the debate if admitting that he would end our sovereign nation status and unwillingness to answer questions could be called a "win".

Bush was perturbed at the line of questioning. Donald Rumsfeld will actually give reporters that, "What are you, a dumbass?" look and response at times.

Just for the record, I said "if".

Note that the premise of this thread was a device that is a little larger than a pen, that could have been removed from Kerry's pocket, appearing on the videos to be a pen, and used to covertly communicate answers for Kerry during the debate.

If this can be proven then great. Otherwise it sound just like DU going of on some contorted rant about how the Rather documents could have been produced in 1972, and with long explanations about how Karl Rove was secretly behind the whole mess, planting the docs and planting Buckhead to expose them and blah, blah, blah.

If the proof exists, please present it, otherwise, we look like kooks.
