First Dog, Barney, recently celebrated his 4th birthday. Here's some photos of the occasion, along with White House captions for the pics.
WH CAPTION: Although thinking it is the worst gift he's ever received, Barney feigns excitement over the early birthday present from White House Faith Based Director Jim Towey.

WH CAPTION: Clearly overcome with excitement, Barney celebrates his fourth birthday. White House photo by Paul Morse.

WH CAPTION: Not wanting to appear ungrateful, Barney wonders privately if it was possible that any less money could have been spent on his cake.

WH CAPTION: Although not exactly the Kung Fu DVD box set he requested for his birthday, Barney attempts to have fun with a thrilling new multi-colored ball.

WH CAPTION: Known for his mastery of 1980s dance moves, Barney moonwalks on the South Lawn.

This post is for those of us who need a harmless break from the intensity of the campaign to reelect Barney's boss.

Nothing quite like a terrier.

I love Barney! Bless his heart, he doesn't look too enthused about the party or the cake. Just like any 4 yr old, he's only interested in the presents.

I have a cat living amongst my three dogs (four dogs until one died in February). She rules them all except my pit bull. She doesn't even fear the pit bull, although she should.

The President's much beloved Spotty died just a couple of weeks shy of her 15th birthday. I miss her too.

Yep, most terriers are pretty expressive dogs. Barney is star in his own right.

Kerry response: President Bush's failure to provide adequate exercise for canine's is illustrated by giving his own dog, Barney, one tennis ball for his 4th birthday. When the issue of Barney's birthday present came up in congress, I actually did vote for more than one tennis ball, *before* I voted against it. It was a vote based on principle, because I believed that the wealthy should be taxed to pay for extra tennis balls. The President didn't see it my way.
Barney's reply: Something warm is waiting for you on your senate office chair- *if* you ever come back to work.
