Kerry Gained Favorability after Debate but Bush Is Still Preferred As Commander-In-Chief

John Kerry goes into Friday’s second presidential debate with more Americans having a favorable opinion of him now than did before his first debate with George W. Bush. But the public still clearly regards Bush as someone they would trust more as commander-in chief of the military and to lead the war on terrorism.

Annenberg from 10/1 through 10/6.

No horse race numbers, but all of the internal data looks really good. Job approval at 51% in the poll taken immediately before the debate, and that's the job approval in the poll just released.

I think the biggest surprise in these latest polls is how well Bush is doing with respect to Kerry on the economy. That has been a major shift from polls of a few months ago.

So what credence does everyone give to the O'Reily theory about Ohio making it or breaking it for Bush this year? O'Reily hasn't exactly been in my best graces recently, but it was one theory out there. Of course, O'Reily seemed trial-ballooned it off of Shephard Smith this afternoon by having good 'ol Shep break the news about the theory. Oh, what was I doing home in the afternoon? Watching Fox, of course! I'm a consultant :p

Ratz, can't get the article here on my dad's computer. President Bush's job approval rating is really 51%? Does that relate to just Iraq, or everything?

Once this election is over and George W. Bush is sworn in for another 4 years... John Kerry's career is done, he will be reduced to groveling for his allowance from TaRaZa

O'Reilly is dumber than a bag of hammers. I pay no attention to any of his "theories", and neither should you.

Nah, Kerry will still remain Senator from MA until they remove his carcas from the senate floor. MA will never vote him out.

O'Reilly is blinded by his ego. He said the Swift Boat Vets story would go away in a week. Wrong! He said Rathergate was bunk. Wrong! He's been wrong a lot so I wouldn't pay ANY attention to O'Reilly.

There are both good and bad rumors about the job reports. It concerns me.

I actually agree with O'Blowhard on this one. I think Ohio will be this year's Florida.

Kerry has done nothing for the State of MA

Doubt he'll be replaced by a Republican .. but I'd say there is a very good chance he could be replaced by another Dem

I think Dick Morris has been right all along. If the race is about national defense, Bush wins. So far it is, and he is. These poll numbers reflect that big time.

Another important overall change was that 67 percent of registered voters now say that the United States should keep troops in Iraq until a stable government is established there, while 28 percent say the troops should come home as soon as possible.

In the Sept. 21-26 polling, 58 percent favored keeping the troops there until stability was achieved while 38 percent wanted them brought home as soon as possible.

Bush needs to hammer this home in the debate. America has never favored retreat (in any war). This is a winning strategy for the election and it is the right thing to do.

I trust President Bush with the live's of my grandchildren.Who do you trust? I'm asking everyone that question I can from now through the election.

I think O'Reily is a hothead who wants to get in good with See-BS so he can be their next anchor. But I could see Ohio being crucial, though I haven't had time to sit down and do the numbers. Still, O'Reily probably got that analysis from somewhere himself. I recommend all of us get our analysis on things like votes and numbers from someone other.
