Social Darwinism has reared its head.
Senator Kerry wasn't busted for *anything* while serving at Lt Governor under Dukakis in Massachusetts, or as Senator, or during the Democratic Party primaries...
...But so far in the general election he's been busted for: falsely claiming Senator Bob KerrEy's key vote on one bill, for falsely claiming Senator Bob KerrEy's Vice Chairmanship of the Senate Intel Committee, for not being in Cambodia on Christmas of 1968, for not being sent to Cambodia by Nixon (who wasn't even in office then), for having the "V" on his Silver Star, and for getting 2 purple hearts for superficial, self-inflicted (though perhaps unintentional) wounds.
All of the above should have been brought up by the press and by his Democratic Party challengers during the Democratic primaries. None were.
This is Social Darwinism. The news media has so protected its own by covering for them in the press that over time its herd has grown weak.
In the meantime, Republicans have been under attack for so long in and by the news media that the weak have been culled from our herd and only the strong remain on our side.
We've seen our Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott be forced to resign his leadership post for telling a one-line joke at a birthday party for Strom Thurmond. We've seen the New York Times fabricate from whole cloth, using elipses, a fake quote from President Bush (courtesy of Maureen Dowd) in order to slam him. We've seen the AP fabricate "Republicans" supposedly boo'ing Bush's kind words of support for former President Clinton's recovery in the hospital (courtesy of the Natural Law Party reporter Tom Hays). We've seen the press go into a feeding frenzy that drove Senator Packwood from office for a single kiss on the lips of a single staffer, and heaven forbid, we've seen them go nuts because Justice Thomas offered a woman a can of Coke.
The *slightest* misstep on the part of Republicans is hammered mercilessly by the news media. In contrast, Sandy Berger stealing top secret national security documents is glossed over as being "inadvertent" by this same news media (courtesy of Chris Lehane). Shoot, the *leaker* of the treasonous Senate Intel Committee documents that showed that the Democrats stalled a judicial nominee in order to get the court decision that they wanted, yes, the patriotic *leaker*, has been drummed out of office...whereas the authors of those memos are still employed in Washington.
...And for years, natch, decades, this constant double-standard has worked for the Democrats. There is no doubt that it has given the Democrats an undeserved boost of 10% to 15% in various elections that they wouldn't have earned simply on the merits of their policy positions or based upon the charisma of their candidates.
But after all of this time, Social Darwinism is finally kicking in. The Democrats have been protected for so long that they've grown soft. Ask Senator Kerry why he voted against the F-14 and against the B-2 and against our national missile defense and he gets so flustered that he lashes out that we are "questioning his patriotism."
On top of Social Darwinism kicking in (with our herd being strong and their herd being weak), we've reached the point in time where *technology* has eroded the old monopolistic power of the news media. Just as the automobile ended the monopoly on transportation once held supreme by the railways and shipping companies, so too has the Internet, talk radio, and Fox News eroded the prime sources of news and information of the established print and broadcast news media.
These are powerful new trends, and there is no doubt that the new trends will dictate a new outcome for political and social discourse in our future. The old ways are doomed.
Bring forth the new!
But also keep in mind that for this trend to continue to work in our favor, that we have to do some things for the long run that may not be pallatable in the short term.
For instance, If Sinclair is violating the horrid Campaign Finance Reform laws (i.e. "the Law") or if some rogue voter registration group is violating rules on filing all applications (even if they are Democrats), then we have to urge that they be prosecuted. See if such charges hold up in a courtroom (they often won't).
In fact, I'll take this concept one step further: Personally, I *want* to see all rogue Republicans prosecuted. We have to hold our side to the highest of standards. This is what will make us stronger in the long run.
This is what it will take for Social Darwinism to continue to favor us in the years ahead: being tougher on ourselves than even the partisan news media has been on us.
This is what it is going to take for us to remain in control of American political power; we have to be tougher on ourselves than even our enemies would be.
Southack, I think you make an excellent point. Over the last several months, I've been pointing out to people the unprecedented attacks that Dubya has endured on a daily -- hourly -- basis .... and yet stands taller than ever.
I'm glad you've refreshed my memory. The Kerrey things have faded away. We should have a sidebar list of Kerry lies to refer to every so often.
This is a Natural Selection (you call it SD) at work on the ideas held by the left, exposed and eliminated but not completely. For instance the mutation which is George Soros is floating around.
Get Tough or Die Bump
I've been saying it for years: Social Darwinism is the best hope for the United States.
Social Darwinists do not kill the weak, but they also do not work to allow them to continue on as weaklings. They don't make the weak strong. They allow each individual to become strong, or die weak. The strong survive and thrive. You get strong, or you die. This holds true for entities, movements, ideologies, etc., as well as individuals.
No, we have to get our own media and be even tougher on them.

Demographics is a different ballgame. The intentional destruction of the Black family by liberals was *not* because they wanted fewer votes, but because it fit in with a strategy of dependence as well as their larger strategy to increase conflict, dissention, and chaos into American society. But that's where abortion has had the largest impact.
Blacks have the most abortions today. This is in direct conflict with the nuclear Black family of 1950, which had fewer abortions than Whites, fewer divorces, fewer children out of wedlock, fewer children in jail, etc. But the nuclear Black family of 1950 has been fissioned apart.
In the meantime, the Left has found a new audience among women (who were still more Conservative than men until the end of the 1970's, on the whole) and Hispanics (and out of the closet gays).
But the demographics do go against the Left. The Baby Boom generation is just now beginning to become first time grandparents (the most conservative point in your life, statistically). For the next couple of decades, this trend will accelerate as that generation ages...and first time grandparents aren't thrilled about their children aborting their grandchildren.
Today's children also have the benefit of seeing the Left exposed. They've seen social program failures and inner cities that haven't been saved by countless decades of socialism.
If you look at America since Nixon (who gave us the EPA, banned or registered machine guns, opened up China, ended the Draft, and pulled out of Vietnam), you'll see that we've gradually restored gun rights through state by state CCW laws, that we've enacted welfare reform, that we've banned at least one hideous (redundant alert) form of abortion, rebuilt our military, and in general moved to the Right.
Consider that Texas and Florida were Democratic states up until the 1990's. Now the trend toward Republicans has roughly equaled the number of voter registrations at around 34% each (roughly) nationally...a far cry from the 2 to 1 advantage that Democrats held into the 1960's.
The holdout states are on the coasts, plus Illinois. Everywhere else you've seen a marked shift somewhat to the Right.
Who would have thought (in the past) that Minnesota would have a Republican governor, Senator, and be trending for GWB in 2004?! Ditto for WI and IA. The state (TN) that elected Gore is hardly going back to the Democrats, either.
And if you look at the 30 states that GWB won back in 2000, you can see that Republicans are well on track to a 60 seat majority in the Senate.
Frankly, 2004 is the last hurrah for Democratic power. Should they sieze the White House through some long shot scandal and then pack the Supreme Court with appointments, they may manage to delay the full onset of national Conservatism by another 30 years.
Otherwise, as California showed by going Right from Gray Davis to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the whole nation is gradually trending our way.
