Where the hell is Andrew Sullivan?

Posted on 10/13/2004 9:50:49 PM PDT by watsonfellow

Since A. Sullivan has made his support of Kerry quite clear and based on one issue (gay marriage) why is he suddenly so silent about Kerry's outing of Mary Cheney?

Being called a glutton or a slothful or slovenly person or an addict is not name-calling, but a statement of fact. Dick Cheney's daughter isn't running for elective office, and her own personal problems should not be an issue for Mr. Kerry to use in a debate.

He said she is a lesbian.

Why did he say that? Let's start there.

A freeper on this thread heard on ABC news this morning that Mrs. Edwards has said that Mrs. Cheney must be embarrassed by her daughter to be so upset by Kerry's words last night.

These are Mrs. Edwards exact words:

In the ugliest outburst yet in the Kerry-lesbian contretemps, the woman who wants to replace Mrs. Cheney told ABC Radio network news Thursday morning, "I think that [Mrs. Cheney's complaint] indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences."

Thanks for that link. I just saw you comment on this on another thread, too.

She's spelled it out for those who pretended to or really didn't "get it".

Hope they get it now.

Thanks freeper Roberts who made a good analogy about this matter:

Imagine if Dubya had proposed a health care plan to help those "suffering from obesity, such as Senator Edwards' wife who is fat".

He answered my letter with some garbage about Bush's other positions--but I countered with his article this summer that stated he was changing from supporting Bush over the gay-marriage issue.

He has gone from a gay man with a world viewpoint to a man who's only viewpoint is the gay world.

So sad he has lost his intellectual integrity.

If she chooses to self-identify with an immoral desire, then that is her own personal problem. Your use of the Orwellian term 'gay' to denote a miserable person is noted.

he's not being quiet. his screeching is so high-pitched, it's just inaudible to the human ear.

I am sort of with you here. I am very happy that the MSM is on to this "story" and not the Osama "exaggeration." But I am worried it is going too far because I have already gotten libs emailing me about the reaction to Alan Keyes ("If Kerry is not a good man for calling her a child of God, its too bad I missed what Mrs. Cheney had to say to Keyes for calling her a "selfish hedonist."), and one bookmarked me to a thread here where Cheney talked about her sexuality at a campaign appearance.

Time to let this one go because the more indignant people get here (and it gets more so by the hour it seems), the worse the backlash is going to be.

The sad thing is Kerry is so, so, so vulnerable for so many reasons and with 18 days left to go this Mary Cheney thing is a HUGE waste of time.

as long as he is explaining his mary cheney comment, his message is lost in the noise. I'm sure no one regrets his choice of comments more than he does right now. I would blame his prep guys; the comment came out so quickly, and was so ham-handed, it seemed as though putting "dick cheney's daughter" and "lesbian" in the same sentence was a major goal for the final debate. ultimately, it looked like he was beating up on a girl.

>>> ultimately, it looked like he was beating up on a girl.

No doubt about that. When he was saying it you could almost see on his face that he knew better.

But my point is just that if the campaign continues to overpoliticize Kerry's gaffe (and that it was), there will be an inevitable backlash as a result of the FAR FAR worse things that other GOPers have said about the Cheney's daughter with nary a peep from them.

Where is Hackworth on Kerry's medals? You can run but you can not hide.

The last few articles I read from him, he is no friend of the Prez, so he may be backing Kerry. Would like to hear more on his stance on this...

LOL! you sound like me. I see a backlash behind every tree and around every corner. (well, not quite, but you get the idea)

but I'm not sure this one can blow back on us.

Most of my coworkers are libs and that is LITERALLY true in my case. If they can stump me (as they did with the Keyes comment which I had honestly forgotten), then I start to worry when I see posters here going a little over the top.

I don't think it will backlash too badly if it dies down soon. I think this furor turned the last debate into an easy Bush win, what more can you ask for?

I agree.

There are more important issues to be concerned about in this election.

Evidently, Andrew's boyfriend must be quite the stud! Must have Andy on a short leash and muzzled.

1) Because neither Kerry nor Edwards "outed" Mary Cheney. She's an open lesbian - is and has been. Her job at Coors was lesbian-gay relations.

2) Because the point that both Kerry and Edwards were claiming to make - something about gay tolerance - Andrew Sullivan agrees with.

I'm not standing up for Andrew Sullivan (a certified jerk) - - or for Kerry (a dangerous Leftist) -- or for gay "rights" (if that means gay marriage and special "protections" under hate laws etc), but this outrage about Kerry mentioning something that Mary Cheney has been totally open about - and that Dick Cheney as openly talked about in front of campaign crowds - seems more than a little forced and phony.

You are so misinformed.

#1. The vice president did not talk about this openly on the campaign trail. He was asked about it, once, during an interview.

#2. It is off limits for politicians to talk about candidate's children. That it was done twice by the Kerry/Edwards team is obviously deliberate an an effort to depress the vote.

#3. Elizabeth Edwards is fat. Everyone knows it and can see it. That doesn't mean it would be okay for the president to have said, during the debate about health care "We recognize that obesity is a problem in this country and we will help people. People like Elizabeth Edwards."

#4. Kerry and Edwards were NOT trying to make a point about tolerance, as you alluded. They were asked directly about gay marriage and how they felt about it.

#5. Mary Cheney may work in gay relations at Coors (although I'd like to see a link to that), but she is an intensely private person. The gay community has asked her to be a spokesperson for their agenda and she has refused.

I find it interesting that you would even ATTEMPT to defend the left on this matter and think the outrage a lot of us feel is forced and phony.

I think you've really outted yourself. Despite your protestations to the contrary, you are an appeaser and certainly NOT a conservative.
