As transportation congestion increases, Americans are indeed focused on shortening their commutes, according to a newly released survey. Conducted on behalf of Smart Growth America and the National Association of Realtors, the survey of 1,130 adults aged 18 and older confirmed what commercial developers have suspected: Americans would rather live near transportation and within 45 minutes of their workplaces.
In all, 79 percent of respondents rated a maximum 45-minute commute as their top priority in choosing where to live (and 87 percent of those planning to buy a home within the next three years), while 75 percent rated high easy access to highways and 72 percent did the same for sidewalks and other places to walk. By comparison, 57 percent were in favor of having a large house with more than one acre of land. Interestingly, minorities particularly favored the close-in neighborhood concept. And 55 percent chose the smart growth concept over sprawl.
The survey would seem to suggest commercial developers are on the right track in their pursuit of town centers and other infill, mixed-use projects. Their philosophy has been that so-called empty nesters want to live within easy access to amenities, while younger workers and specific groups likewise want to live in live-work-play neighborhoods or along transportation lines that make both work and entertainment options readily available.
Belden Russonello & Stewart conducted the survey on behalf of the two associations.
F**k them.
There's only one kind of planning or preservation that is legitimate, and that is for the nosy nellies to put up their own money and buy property at market prices and then impose whatever restrictions they like on it.

Yep, one of those really stuuuuupid survey questions like "would you rather be breathing or not"! SHEEEEEEEESH!!
Total BS!
They didn't ask me.
Ping...
It's a lie to say that 'smart growth' is about cutting commute times... people can choose to move if they want to cut their commute times.
Hear hear!!
That's true. That's what I did and I'm 5 minutes from my work .... 20 minutes on a really bad traffic day!
