Being George Steinbrenner
Biggest choke in sports history by the team with the biggest payroll in the biggest rivalry in sports. Needless to say it's a safe bet that George Steinbrenner is well on his way to insanity. Page 2 looks inside Steinbrenner's head to find out just how far along he is:
All the commentators said it was just part of the game. the general line is "what else do you do, you're gonna be out, your team desperately needs runners to advance, so you do something to try to help your team out". He didn't run the pitcher over, he didn't slug him, just knocked the ball out of his hand, tried to get away with one, didn't, nuff said.
Hey! You guys ought to be a Royals fan, we gave away Beltran, Suppan, Johnny Damon!
Wanna' buy some Expo tee shirts? :>)
My apologies, I like to think I'm kinder than that, What I was doing was observing one of those factoids any student of the game finds so fascinating. Irrespective of which team it was to whom it happened, the loss last night will always figure as the worst example of its kind because, mathematically, no team can ever do worse.
I was truly not trying to rub it in but more, to make an interesting point about the game. Have a glass of your favorite, take a warm bath, go to bed early and remember, they will play baseball in 2005 too.
Sure. You don't hate the Yankees. That's why you said at RE:#77:
>>>>I hate the Yankees ... I still hate the Yankees though.
It's true I hate the Yankees but not their fans. I was not trying to rub it in but you are free to see it any way you want.
First of all, I find it interesting that you felt the need to mention how long I've been on FR. I suspect that you were hoping to find that I had signed up that day, so that you could accuse me of joining just so that I could bash your beloved Yankees. Or maybe you had hoped to lord it over me because you've been here a long time yourself. Sorry to disappoint you.
Second, I do not hold any "vicious nature" towards sports. If you want to see a vicious nature in sports, maybe you should review the actions of those fans at Yankee Stadium that needed police in riot gear on the field to keep them from lynching the umpires.
Third, I didn't mean that Yankee fans have literally spit on Boston fans, it was a figure of speech. Sorry if it offended your sensibilities, and that to you, it somehow denotes a lack of class on my part. Are we all too prim and proper to deal with the word (or for that matter, the concept) of spit?
Fourth, you say that it is obvious that I don't know anything about professional athletes, because I think that someone making $25 million a year doesn't have as much incentive to win as other players. Think about it: everyone wants to win, that's human nature, and to a (frequently) greater extent, male nature. But in professional sports, winning brings with it the chance to earn a better salary - players who perform well enough to help their team win championships are valued more highly than, say, Bill Buckner types (sorry for the reference, Boston fans!). Alex Rodriguez is already making so much money that a superb season, including a championship, is unlikely to get him more money (who besides Steinbrenner could afford to pay him more at this point?). So whether he performs well or not, whether he wins championships or not, he's got little incentive, other than ego and the desire for fame everlasting, to perform, to fight, to grit it out when the chips are down.
And lastly, I do not want a flame war, so refrain from implying or outright saying that I have no class, that I have a vicious nature, or that I don't know anything about professional athletes. If you wish to argue my statements, that's fine, but leave the personal attacks out of it. Yes, I asked if you were a liberal, but given your screen name, do you really think I thought you were? No, I was simply pointing out that the tactics that you were employing - calling those who disagree with you "haters" and bringing up irrelevant facts (26 WS and 39 pennants) - are frequently used by liberals, as I have seen many times in the years I've been frequenting this forum.
And by the way, in case you were wondering, I am NOT a Boston fan.
Yeah, I know. I saw your line in his post, and accidently replied to his post, instead of to you. I was going to post a note pointing out who it was intended for, but I thought everyone would be smart enough to figure it out.
I forgot to mention in my previous post that in addition to your other insults, you called me "ignorant", for merely jokingly suggesting that you must be a liberal. My, my, I guess you didn't have much sense of humor in the wake of that loss, eh?
Control MY emotions? Where exactly did my posts get emotional? I'm not the one who is throwing around insults about my lack of class, ignorance, understanding of professional athletes, calling everyone "Yankee haters", etc.
Anyway, at least we can agree on what needs to happen on Nov. 2nd.
>>>>.... I find it interesting that you felt the need to mention how long I've been on FR.
When you go around referring to a fellow FReeper of five years as a liberal --- a juvenile and outlandish charge --- it needs to be pointed out that such talk is way over the top and way out of line. So yes, it was absolutely necessary.
>>>>I suspect that you were hoping to find that I had signed up that day, so that you could accuse me of joining just so that I could bash your beloved Yankees. Or maybe you had hoped to lord it over me because you've been here a long time yourself. Sorry to disappoint you.
Relax. Fact is, it never entered my mind and I'm not disappointed at all. I suggest you stop being paranoid.
>>>... I do not hold any "vicious nature" towards sports.
Your rhetoric expresses something different. Your posts have been malicious, as in spiteful.... and you know it too.
>>>>If you want to see a vicious nature in sports, maybe you should review the actions of those fans at Yankee Stadium that needed police in riot gear on the field to keep them from lynching the umpires.
I don't excuse bad behavior by anyone. That includes you.
>>>>I didn't mean that Yankee fans have literally spit on Boston fans, it was a figure of speech.
Never thought you were being literal.
>>>>Sorry if it offended your sensibilities, and that to you, it somehow denotes a lack of class on my part. Are we all too prim and proper to deal with the word (or for that matter, the concept) of spit?
It was an uncontrolled outburst on your part. Fine. Literal or not, it was obvious your intentions were to disparage the Yankees and their fans with inciteful rhetoric. It was spiteful and uncalled for.
I won't even comment on your fourth point. All you did was attack success and whine some more about the Yankees and A-Rod. It's like you forgot that A-Rod was about to sign with the Red Sox, before the deal fell through and he then signed with the Yanks.
>>>>And lastly, I do not want a flame war, so refrain from implying or outright saying that I have no class, that I have a vicious nature, or that I don't know anything about professional athletes.
I call'em the way the see'm.
>>>>If you wish to argue my statements, that's fine, but leave the personal attacks out of it.
Pot calling the kettle black rhetoric.
>>>>Yes, I asked if you were a liberal, but given your screen name, do you really think I thought you were?
Priceless!!!
>>>>No, I was simply pointing out that the tactics that you were employing - calling those who disagree with you "haters" and bringing up irrelevant facts (26 WS and 39 pennants) - are frequently used by liberals, as I have seen many times in the years I've been frequenting this forum.
Irrelevent facts! My tactics! LOL I was simply defending my team, on an anti-Yankee thread, filled a bunch of Yankee haters.
Why you became so defensive, is your problem. Not mine.
Just keeping the record straight. Are you always so defensive about everything? OMG
>>>>I forgot to mention in my previous post that in addition to your other insults, you called me "ignorant", for merely jokingly suggesting that you must be a liberal. My, my, I guess you didn't have much sense of humor in the wake of that loss, eh?
Bottomline. You were very sincere about your insinuation. Look bucko, I don't have patience with people like you, who act like 12 year olds and run around spewing hatred to make themsleves feel better.
>>>>Control MY emotions?
YES! Control your emotions.
Btw. The greatest choke in sports history belongs to the Buffalo Bills. Nothing beats losing four Super Bowls in a row.
Spewing hatred? There you go again, everyone is spewing hatred, everyone hates the Yankees.
Look, find me ONE bit of "hatred" in any of my posts, and by all means, point it out to me.
Bottomline. You were very sincere about your insinuation
Well, I'm glad I have you around to tell me how sincere I am about things. Nevermind what I say about my own intentions or feelings.
And once again, you feel the need to try to insult me, saying that I'm acting like a 12-year old. I'm not the one who was running around saying, "You're just a Yankee hater!" every time someone commented on their implosion, you are. You have repeatedly tried to paint me as being some sort of angry, hatefilled, bile-spewing, immature whiner.
Again, show me ONE thing in ANY of my posts that is "hateful", please.
Is this the best you can do? To repeatedly accuse everyone of being "hateful"?
Pathetic.
>>>>You have repeatedly tried to paint me as being some sort of angry, hatefilled, bile-spewing, immature whiner.
It wasn't difficult either. Your words speak for themselves. Besides, if you can see it, who am I to screw with the truth. A good summation. I won't change a thing.
YOU have spent a lot of time accusing everyone of being Yankee haters, but little, if any, backing up what you say.
Meanwhile, you seem oblivious to your own rhetoric.
You were particularly upset that I asked if you were a liberal. Not sure why, considering that you did the following:
1. Attempted to defend bad behavior by claiming that "everyone does it" or "everyone would, if they could get away with it"
2. Repeatedly attacked the messenger, accused those who disagreed with you of being "hateful" or "haters", "angry", etc., rather than argue the point (to wit, you have suggested that I was acting juvenile, that I am ignorant, childish, viscious, etc. And you called other posters losers and whiners, and you called just about everyone a hater). By contrast, I have at no time made any personal attacks on you, just your remarks. Apart from bringing up 26 WS and 39 pennants, I don't see much of you actually making a reasoned response to anyone - you just say they're Yankee-haters and losers.
3. Projected your own anger and hatred onto others, even as you deny that you are either angry or hateful yourself (the old ploy of claiming the high moral ground, whether you're standing on it or not)
Classic liberal tactics, and you used every one. Whether you are a loyal, die-hard Republican or not, I really don't care. The simple fact is that you argue and attempt to justify your points like a liberal.
Some examples of YOUR mature, pleasant level of discourse, from your own posts:
"when the team is trashed from a bunch of lowlifes"
"Here I thought you were just a Yankee hater."
"You guys have been losers for years"
"Spoken like a true Yankee hater!"
"I understand that people like you hate the Yanks"
"to be trashed by people who hatethem."
"I was simply defending my team, on an anti-Yankee thread, filled [with] a bunch of Yankee haters."
"Typical rhetoric from another Yankee hater"
Do you think you could make any more claims about hate? It's a terribly weak way to debate. By constantly accusing any who disagree of "hating," you seek to delegitimize their criticisms by assigning some nefarious motive to them. This is just like the liberals who suggest that simply because someone is opposed to gay marriage, it must be because they "hate" homosexuals. Or that someone who disagrees with "progressive" taxation, must be a greedy person who has no compassion for those less fortunate. THAT is what is pathetic about your arguments, and THAT is what makes you come across LIKE a liberal. Can you not see the difference between saying that you come across LIKE a liberal, and saying that you ARE a liberal? And you talk about ME being defensive? You've been squealing like a stuck pig ever since I said that you seemed like a liberal in the way you were going about making your arguments, and you tell ME to control MY emotions?
Whatever. I've wasted enough of my time on you. Since numerous other posters also pointed out your inclination to label everyone a hater or loser or whatever, there's no need for me to try to prove the point to you.
You get outed as a hostile and angry Yankee hater, so what do you do? Go on a mindless rant and engage in ad hominem rhetoric, in what can only be called an all out effort to start a flame war with me. Best you face reality. You lost the argument. Instead of obfuscating the truth about your own remarks on this thread and condemning me for defending the Yankees against outrageous and outlandish outbursts, I suggest you read exactly what it was you and others actually posted. Although that probably won't do any good, because you're in a full blown state of denial.
If you have something relevent to say, you know where to find me. Until then, cool your jets, bucko.
You attacked nearly everyone who posted to you on this thread as a loser, a whiner, a hater, etc., and you continue to attack me.
You are presently displaying the classic liberal characteristic of projection.
What you don't do is respond to the points made, by me or anyone else. No, far easier to keep saying that I am hostile, angry, ignorant, arrogant, and emotional. Look in the mirror, "bucko".
You get outed as a hostile and angry Yankee hater
Good one. You must have been the captain of your debate team.
Sounds like a John Kerry flip-flop. LOL I'd say two more posts from you indicate an obsessive, compulsive behavioral pattern. You're still in denial about everything you posted on this thread. Sorry, I can't help you. You'll have to seek professional help.
